Danny Sims 2003
Dec 2003
Unit 24B, Arizona
Danny is from NM, and this was his first Coues hunt. Even though it’s not the biggest buck, he was thrilled with it. He hunted for 7 days before finally finding this one. Danny took him down with one shot at 350 yards. Danny says it was the most fun he has ever had on a hunt and he can’t wait to go again!!!
Mark Taylor and Doug McKenna 2003
Dec 2003
Unit 24A, Arizona
Both these bucks were taken side by side at 600 yards with a 7mm (the picture on the left) and a 30-06 (right). They could not put a sneak on ’em due to their location across the canyon. Both bucks were milling around and ended up standing broadside to them. The time of day was about 10:15 AM. The reload that Mark used was a 140 grain Combined Technology silver ballistic tip which entered close to the shoulder and somehow exited through the rump, fortunately without destroying the guts. Mark credits his marksmanship to the Marine Corps training.
Brandon Leister 2003
Dec 2003
Unit 24A, Arizona
After helping his father get a great buck (above), Brandon hunted several more days and finally got this wonderful buck.
Dean Leister 2003
Dec 2003
Unit 24A, Arizona
Dean killed this fine buck on opening morning of his hunt! He shot him at 225 yards with his .270. This buck nets about 95 inches. His son, Brandon, also got an excellent buck later in the season (see below) . Brandon says he saw 24 bucks on opening weekend.
Adam Kautman 2002

Adam got this great buck even after he blew the stalk on him that morning. He eventually got him later in the day. Adam says this buck scores 111 inches.
Kevin Smithson 2003
Dec. 2003
Unit 31, Arizona
Brady Bryce and Kevin Smithson hunted together during the late whitetail hunt in Unit 31.
They saw this buck Saturday morning and couldn’t do anything where he was at. They went back in there Monday morning and found him for just a second and he walked out of sight. Then they decided to take a chance and walk right where they last saw him, not knowing where he went to. They got where they wanted to be and started glassing. Then they saw a little buck up on top and after a few minutes saw this buck and decided to take him. They ranged him at 285 yards. Kevin Smithson downed him with one shot. He was shooting a .300 Weatherby Magnum Loaded with 165 Grain Nosler Ballistic tips. Kevin is very happy with this buck. He scored right at 100 inches.
Martin Guerena 2003
Dec. 16, 2003
Unit 24A, Arizona
Martin has been drawn 3 years in a row for this coveted 24A tag. And this is the 3rd exceptional deer he has killed in this unit. This buck has excellent mass and eyeguards. It’s only a 2 point (plus eyeguards), but it is an outstanding 2 point! I scored it last night and it nets 87 4/8. The eyeguards are 5 inches long. The G-2s are 5 4/8 R, 6 0/8 L. Main beams are 15 2/8 R, 15 4/8 L. Inside spread is 13 6/8. 1st circumference measurement is 3 6/8 on both sides.
Martin got his buck in some very brushy country. He took about a 225 yard shot to kill him while he was bedded. One shot, through the heart. Martin spent a lot of time thinking about whether to take him, since he doesn’t score real high, but he couldn’t resist the eyeguards and the mass! If you look at the bases of his antlers you can see plant material still stuck on them. He must have been fighting some trees in preparation for the rut.
This buck had lots of fat on him and when they tried to weigh him (dressed), he weighed more than the 100 lb scale could hold. They estimate that his dressed weight was 110 lbs.
Suzy Bingham 2003
2001
Unit 31, Arizona
This buck has a monstrous body. They estimate he weighed 130 lbs. dressed! Wow, what a brute. It netted about 92 inches, not bad for a 2 point (plus eyeguards)! She took this buck at 350 yards with a 257 Roberts shooting 117 grain Remington core lokt’s.
Dane Bigham 2003
Dec 2003
Unit 32, Arizona
Dane is 14 years old and he took this buck with a custom built 6.5×55 Swedish at 180 yards, using 120 grain Sierra handloads. Check out those eye guards!! Net score 97. It was a long drag back to the truck and unfortunately the pictures reflect this.
Mark Denham 2003
Nov 2003
Unit 32, Arizona
This is 10-year-old Mark’s first Coues deer buck. He got this nice buck on his first big game hunt with the help of his dad, Chris Denham. He made an excellent long shot on this deer after waiting 4.5 hours for just the right moment.
Troy Clark 2003
Oct 2003
Unit 33, Arizona
Troy got this nice young buck on October 24th. They had a family barbeque the following week and had deer steaks that had marinated in terryaki overnight. He said his 7 year old daughter went back for four servings!
David Hawkins 2001
2001
Unit 24A, Arizona
On the second day of the hunt, David shot at this buck about 500 yards across a large canyon and missed. He just walked off. David left him alone for a couple of days, and then went back and found him in almost the exact same place where he had shot two days earlier. The closest shot he could get was 400 yards across the same canyon. This time he connected. He scored a net 92 3/8. His main beam mass is great, too bad he didn’t point out better. David thought this buck would go 100, but it just wasn’t evenly matched enough.
Ryan Hawkins 2002
2002
This is Ryan’s first Coues deer. He got this buck after hunting hard every day of the season until he got his buck with only 3 days left of the hunt. Ryan had passed on 12 other bucks.
Ryan’s dad says he thinks Ryan is now hooked on Coues deer. He used to only hunt Mule deer, but says Coues is more of a challenge.
Ernesto Cibrian 2003
Oct 2003
Unit 36C, Arizona
This buck has 4 points on each side and he took it with a 150 yard shot. Ernesto had to wait more than 3 hours after finding this buck in order to get a good shot. That is dedication! He shot it around 11:30 am. And as if waiting wasn’t hard enough, poor Ernesto was stung by a bee on his left eyelid about 30 minutes before shooting this buck. If you look close in the photo you can see his left eye starting to swell shut.
Chris Yrigolla 2003
Nov 2003
Unit 33 , Arizona
This buck is almost perfectly symmetrical. It rough scores around 98 3/4. Chris took this with two shots from his .243 Savage at 300 yards. He passed up a forkhorn and a spike before taking this one at 7:30 am. Chris says the fog was so thick he had to wait 2 hours to find his downed buck!!
Steven Martin 2003
Nov 2003
Unit 29, Arizona
Steven passed up 5 little bucks before he saw this one. They glassed him up right underneath them at sixty yards but he was in thick brush with no shot. They jumped it out and it all went perfect. The buck stopped broadside at 306yds and Steven made the shot. He got him about 10am.
Danny and Alexandra Howard 2003

Dan got this great buck with one 300 yard shot from his .30-.06. He says it grosses 101 7/8, but it looks bigger to me. I will measure it soon.
Dave Vines 2003
Nov. 2003
Unit 34A, Arizona
Dave has been after this buck for several years. You can read his hunt story by clicking here. The bottom photo shows this buck after he boiled the skull. You can see the interesting points around the eyeguards on this buck in that second photo. This buck grossed 92 1/8 and nets 88 1/8.
Here are some more details on the measurements:
Right main beam = 15 1/2
Left main beam = 16
Right G2 = 8 1/2
Left G2 = 7 3/4
Inside spread = 12
Phil Hinkle 2003
Nov 2003
Unit 33, Arizona
Phil got this fine deer on November 8, 2003. He took it with a 280 yard shot. He passed up a spike about 20 minutes before finding this buck. It green scores about 86 points. Phil was about two miles away from the nearest truck and says that’s the best way to find the big bucks. He has seen some 120 inch bucks in past archery seasons, but never has connected with them.
Todd Julian 2003
October 2003
