Albert Gutierrez and Shawn George 2005
Oct 2005
Unit 33, AZ
Albert and his friend Shawn George both shot these deer on Saturday October 29 in the late afternoon. They spotted these two bucks and a doe walking through a creek bed. Albert shot his deer at 250 yards. Shawn’s deer did not run after Albert’s deer went down, therefore he took a shot at 200 yards and hit him. Several moments later they found our deer and were very excited. Both deer had some broken tines. It appears as though they had been broken for some time now.
Jimmy Messner 2005
Oct 2005
Unit 36C, Arizona
This is Jimmy’s first Coues deer!!!
Here is some of the story as told by James Mullins (aka Coosefan).
My brother-in-law, Jimmy Messner, an avid Mule deer hunter, drew his very first coues tag this year. He said he’s shooting the first buck he finds!!!! Opening morning finds him hiking way in, and glassing for several hours. He stays late in the morning, when everyone else heads out, and keeps glassing, eventually spotting his buck. He cut the 600 yards between him and the deer in half and made a perfect shot. To his credit, he hiked way in off the road, stayed late, glassed hard and made a great shot, so I feel he deserved such a fine trophy. His incredible typical gross scores 113 5/8″, and was the biggest checked out at the check station at the time. He pulled the same stunt in August 2005 with a San Carlos bear tag. He said he was shooting the first bear he saw, and that first bear was opening morning and scored 20 7/8″ with a huge body!!!! The pic’s of that bear just came out in the last issue of “Western Hunter Magazine”. I’m leaving for my 36B hunt and I’m shooting the FIRST BUCK I SEE!!!!!!! Thanks for your time, Jim Mullins (COOSEFAN)

Jeff got this monster buck on his October hunt. He rough scores it at about 114. What an awesome buck!
Jeff’s son, Josh, got a very nice antelope this Sept. The Brown Family is having a great hunting year!
Noel Arnold 2005
Oct 2005
Here are some pictures of the buck Noel got on opening morning. He was going to try and hold out for a bigger one this year (because he has a lot of meat from the archery elk hunt), but his dad also had a tag and he had found a very large buck before the season. So Noel wanted to try and concentrate on helping him get that buck. They never could get the big one, although his dad passed on one that they figured would go about 105. All and all he says he had a great hunt!
Leonard Para 2005

This was Robert’s first experience hunting Coues deer. His son Brent (aka cohofishing) convinced his dad to come down from Alaska and give Coues a try. Robert was drawn for the Oct hunt and Brent took him to a spot on opening morning. He got this 75 inch 3 point at about 0720 on opening day! It was a 100 yard shot.
Francisco Romero 2003
Nov. 2003
Douglas, AZ
Francisco hasn’t had this bad boy scored yet, but it is obviously a huge one!
Darren Choate 2005
Oct 2005
Opening day he saw 13 bucks. Late in the day he took two shots, but missed. Darren did not account for the wind that was gusting about 10-15 mph, and it was a straight-on shot, probably one he thinks he should not have taken. Or perhaps buck fever had set in.
Day two Darren once again spotted the biggest buck he had seen on the first day. Before he could make a move, the buck was startled by something on a hillside near to him. After watching several bucks, Darren went to an area that he suspected this buck was bedded. Sure enough, under the same tree he had seen a different buck the day before there he was. Darren closed the distance and put him down.
Then, he had to pack me, my gear, and the deer (quartered) 2 miles back to the truck. Needless to say, he was exhausted.
Darren thinks the buck scores about 90 inches and it has a 16 inch inside spread.
Tal Jenkins 2005
Oct 2005
Unit 36A, Arizona
Tal shot this nice buck on Saturday morning in area 36A. He spotted him on a high hill while hiking a canyon. The buck had not seen him yet so Tal had time to lay down and get a good shot. Tal estimated the distance at about 400 yards. He held about 1 foot over his back and hit him dead center in the chest cavity with the 1st shot from his 30-06.
Oct 2006 – Tal recently updated the information here. He measured this buck at 104.5 gross and 97.25 with deductions. And he sent in a photo of his mount. Tal is headed out this year to the same area in hopes of finding another great buck!
Hyrum D’Addabbo 2005
Oct 2005
Unit 36B, Arizona

Audra Sherman 2005
Oct 2005
Unit 31, Arizona
Audra got her first Coues deer this year! She had some help from her twin sister, her father and Danny Howard and his children. The kids really hung in there during the hunt. They had to hike some tough hills and be patient waiting to find the buck, and then Audra made a perfect shot with a .22-250 at about 240 yards. You can read a lot more of the story and see more pictures in the discussion forum.
The Long Family
The top photo shows the Long family collection of deer taken over many years.

William Hargett 1963
1963
Unit 23, Arizona
This amazing 7×5 buck scores 125 6/8 and was taken by William back in 1963. Larry Maniag sent these photos in.
Jason Sherwood
Jason got the buck in the first photoon public land and it scores 105. He shot it with a 300 RUM.
The second and third photos show a buck that scores 118 6/8 SCI.
Here is what Jason had to say about getting that 118:
The buck that scores 118 6/8 was shot at a distance of 450 yards. My hunting partner and myself found this buck two weeks before the season opened. We flipped a coin to see who would get a chance at this buck, my buddy won the toss and went in to try and kill this buck. We didn’t find him the first day and my hunting partner ended up killing a buck that scores 103 the first night, a tough buck to past up on this hunt. We continued to hunt with no success, then on the second to last day we thought we will go try to do a push for a buck in the canyon that the 103 came out of. Stupid idea, I said let’s go do what we do best ” glass” . We hadn’t been glassing for very long when I spotted a buck coming out of a draw. I watched him for a couple minutes with my spotting scope, he was a dink. I had just put my 15×56 back on the tripod when I noticed another buck had join the first. I could tell he had great mass so I shot, not until we walked up to buck did we know that it was the same buck we were looking for. we stood in awe of this great buck. He was a hard buck to photograph because of the points that come off the back of the antler. He has 8 points on the right and 5 on the left. The Extra brow tine and the point that hooks up on the left is really interesting. I have hunted a long time and looked at a lot of different coues bucks and have never seen points come off the back like this buck does.
Kurt Craig 2004
Dec 2004
Unit 33, Arizona
The top photo shows the buck he got before he shot it. The photo was taken through 10×50 binoculars at 600 yards.
Kurt was trying to get within 300 yards but one of the bucks does saw him and started moving off so he had to set up at 400+yards. The first shot hit low but he adjusted & the second shot hit the mark. The antlers had two broken tines; it would have scored in the 103 range.
Ted Dyson 2004
Dec. 2004
Unit 36b, Arizona
Ted took this buck in 36b in December @ 378 yards using a .300 weatherby magnum. He and his hunting partners glassed him up from about 800 yards away using Minox 15×56’s and Doctor 12×50’s. He has not scored him yet but it probably scores in the low to mid 90’s. They saw a lot of nice 3×3’s averaging 10 to 15 bucks a day and narrowly missed a chance at a real heavy 4×4 but they just ran out of light. They also saw a mountain lion kill a yearling deer from around 500 yards away in the same canyon this buck was taken from. Unfortunately they were on Buenos Aires Wildlife Refuge and you are not allowed to take lion there.
All three of his sons have pictures in there from earlier this fall (Teddie, Ryan, and Christian Dyson). Here is a link to their photos.
