Dec. 30, 2008
Northern Arizona
“My name is Ryan Rawlinson and this year I had the chance to hunt my favorite coues deer unit in northern AZ. After holding out until December 30th I shot one of the biggest deer I had ever seen. I shot the buck at 305 yards with the a 257 Weatherby Mag. This buck unoficaly scores 110 5/8 gross and nets 109 4/8 with 28 inches of mass. I hope this is not the last time I get a chance at one of these great bucks.”
Jeff Menke 1983
1983
Unit 22, Arizona
Here is what Jeff said about this very unique buck:
I got the buck in December of 1983 after a large snowstorm the weekend before in Unit 22 near Pine, Arizona. The shot was around 100+ yards across a very dense shrub and tree area. Although the shot was good, the buck turned and disappeared in a thicket. Meanwhile, a doe watched on. I waited about 45 minutes, and then hiked across the canyon and up to the spot and found the buck hidden under some brush. These guys will truly try and hide from you no matter what shape they are in. I then had the fun of prepping and then hiking/dragging the buck out of a canyon, by myself, which took about 4 hours. I have a picture somewhere in my house after I brought it back, but haven’t found it yet. The extra horns made it nicer to drag the buck along the icy inclined area to my vehicle. I am very thankful that my first whitetail hunt turned out so positive! The weather this year should help hunters bring in some nice racks!

From Mark:
Thought you might like these pictures of a 110- 3/8″ buck taken in 2′ of snow in N. AZ in Dec. 08′
A little out of the norm from the desert pics we are all used to seeing, and friends thought they were excellent pictures of a great buck, from a very tough but well worth it hunt.
When was the last time someone had to ride a snowmobile and wear snowshoes to track down the grey ghost?

Christian and Randy Wolff
Christian got his buck on the 2nd day of the hunt with his .280. The buck scores just over 100.
Randy (Christian’s father) got his buck on the 4th day of the hunt with his .25-06. His buck scores just over 96 with a broken main beam.
Christian says they couldn’t have had such a successful hunt without the help of their friend Tyler (aka elkhunter).
Here is a link to their hunt story in the forum.
Dylan Eck, Bob Eck and Bryan Cochran
Central AZ
Top photo shows Dylan Eck with his 100 inch buck. 2nd photo is Bob Eck with his 105 inch buck with some small stickers and a drop tine on his left antler. Bryan Cochran got a 109 inch buck which had 3-4 inches broken off the g-4 and main beam on left side.
Suzy Bingham 2008
2008
Suzy Bingham took this buck in 2008 with a custom Mauser in 257 Roberts. The shot was 376 yards with 115 grain Nosler ballistic tip handloads. Our oldest daughter Katie decided to tag along with us and got to enjoy the events of the day. She got to see a gray fox at ten yards, lots of rutting activity, bucks hooking trees, chasing does and her mom take this buck with a great shot. Katie is also in excellent shape physically and without her help we would never have been able to get this buck back to the truck before dark. Nice mature two point buck that scores 81 5/8.

Amy and Ryan Ballard 2008
Nov. 2008
“Amy shot her deer on the second day of the hunt. She had said no to shooting a spike at first but as the weather got worse and the thought of only having one more day to hunt she got a little weak and took this deer at 303 yards with her 22-250 with one shot in the neck.
I glassed up my deer on the third day of the hunt after sitting in the same spot all day the first day and only seeing a few does. I had scouted this deer a few week before the hunt and planned on Amy shooting him on the first day but couldn’t find him. We went back in to that spot on the third day knowing he was there and I found him right away. I cut the distance to 493 yards and took the shot with my 22-250. I hit him twice just a little to far back to hit the vitals but it still took him down. When Amy and I walked up on him he stood up and one more shot finished him off.”

His wife Heather sent these photos in and says:
“This is my husbands 2nd Coues buck (scores 122 SCI). His first was a fork horn and my first was a 100 3/8 inch so this year he was determined to out do me. He actually had a bet with the local taxidermist that he couldn’t beat it in one year. The Taxidermist now owes us dinner. LOL”

37B, Arizona
“Here is my 37b buck that I got Nov 1st, 2008. I had planned on hunting all week and passing up many deer since I was on vacation. As luck would have it My cousin Randy Phillips found this nice 4×4 with nice eyeguards about 8:30 on the second day of the hunt, my first day I was able to go out. My son Kenon is also in the picture and is excited to start his Coues Whitetail hunting career, since he will be 10 next year and will be hunting with dad with his own tag and gun. This was his first successful hunt after many dry runs in the past. I used a .243 and the shot distance was about 250 yards. Buck scores in the low 90’s.”

“I have been hunting Coues deer for ten years, and this is my 4th tag. I knew this year I finally had the time to hunt the way I really needed to find these beautiful animals. The photos show how my efforts paid off.
This is my 2008 Buck from Northern Arizona, taken on December 27th, 2008. I hunted hard to get a bigger buck than my previous one of 94”, and succeeded in taking this beauty that scored 125 ¾ net.
I would like to thank my hunting partner Lavar Kendall and my friend George Cordova for helping me be successful in this hunt.”
