Derek Case and Robert Goodridge 2010
Oct. 2010
Unit 32, AZ
here is what Derek had to say about the hunt:
This was my very first deer ever and the first time I ever put in az.
I got drawn in unit 32 woke up opening day and went to the top of a hill just next to camp and saw a doe and spike about 400 yards out so I decided to get closer and crawled for about 50 yards to look over the edge and found him rubbing an ocotillo about 300 yards out I watched him for about 20 minutes and decided to take a shot I shot just over top of him by bout 2 inches and he ran another 30yards and stopped I took a second shot and he disappeared so I thought I missed again when we went to look for him there was not a single drop of blood so we went looking for more deer until my friend looked to his left and saw hoofs sticking out of a bush my second had hit him and he fell into the bush about 20ft from where he was hit. I got him at 310yards and was a 2×2 it was a great hunt but then I had 6 more days to go to help my friend find his and we did we were up on top of another hill on the day before closing day of our hunt and he spotted a big tom mountain lion creeping through the tress and I heard something running down the hill and spotted two bucks– my friend had to decide to take the lion or the deer and at this time the deer was closer so he took it , it ended up being 120 yards away when he shot and was a good 3×3 coues

In the first photo Bryant took this 5×5 with a 7mm. In the second photo is Brandon with his deer. We didn’t score it but it is a decent deer. The last photo is Nathan with the deer he took. The weather was a little cooler than normal and it was pretty windy. We didn’t see many bucks during the hunt but had a good time. Looking forward to next year.

Ellisa Black
here is what Ellisa had to say about her hunt:
I have hunted Coues whitetail for about 8 years now, and have put in countless hours of walking and glassing the hills and canyons. This year, I was fortunate to find this buck prior to the hunt, but because of past experience, never thought I’d find him again after the hunt started. However, I had good advice to keep checking the area I had seen him in. On opening day I headed out with my brother, Larry, who also had a tag. At daybreak, we were lucky enough to glass up this buck. Our friend Danny Carrasco accompanied us and assisted in the teamwork that led to me harvesting this beautiful buck. Even without the right eye guard, his gross score is 106. For me, it is truly a buck of a lifetime!
Dillon Leitner 2010
Oct. 2010
here is what his Dad had to say about the hunt:
“D didn’t get the opportunity to get a shot last year. He was pretty sick on his first ever deer hunt and we just couldn’t close the distance. This year however was a different story. We put a stalk on a few bucks Saturday morning and within a short while we were 200 yards from the deer. Dillon used the range finder to get the distance while I set up the tripod for him to shoot off for a steady rest. He made a great shot and the deer expired instantly where he stood. Dillon is already talking about getting “the big one” next year.”
Heather and Trent Penrod 2010
Oct. 2010
here is what Trent said of the hunt:
“Heather and I both shot our first Coues Whitetail on Monday at 1:00. Did a double smack down on the only two bucks we saw that day. Heather shot first then handed me the rifle and watched me fling lead. They fell not 30 yards apart and we captured both shots on Video!! Heathers is of course nicer than mine but with two days to hunt ( Thanks Mom and Dad, For baby sitting) I was ready to shoot spikes. Glad Heather got one for the wall!!”

here is Barney had to say about the hunt:
“It was mine and my brothers hunt on opening day my brother saw a total of 15 bucks and 8 does I did not the first day cause of work but I got to the spot around 5:15 am. We were going to glass the area. My brother saw that big buck right away and he used his Leica range finder and he was 897 yards so we watch him for a little, but then a spike came out. Then we lost the deer so we walk towards him post up again for a hour still couldn’t find him, so I said let’s go spook him out and sure thing that nice buck came out of the deep cut at 50 yards I shot him and drop him with one shot. The unit was 36 A Equipment was Swarovski 15×56 and 243 REM”

John McSpadden
John has been hunting Coues for several years and sent in photos of the many bucks he has taken. The first two pics show a buck that goes with the following story.
“It was the last day of my early Coues white tail deer hunt and I still hadn’t filled my tag. That morning before sunrise, my girlfriend Lee Anne and I decided to go to one of my favorite low land ridges where mostly mule deer graze, but this morning we stumbled onto a small herd of 5 bucks and 16 doe. The ridge Lee and I sat on was adjacent to the other where the deer fed, I had one shot to take at this buck before he would race about ten feet into extremely thick low-land brush. I pulled the trigger on my brand new Remington .308 after taking aim and it was game over.”
