Topic for Admins - Classified scammers / 1st time posters

Recommended Posts

Rokslide has a 10 post minimum before you can PM or even respond in the classifieds. I am a newby there and found a set of binos listed but couldnt PM or respond to purchase. I didnt want to do 10 BS posts just to get to the minimum. It all worked out and i got my 10 posts and the glass is on the way here, but I thought for sure i was going to miss a deal.

So the moral of my rambling, is maybe 10 posts to post to the classifieds, but not to respond...

I'm sure I'm missing something (esp being a newbie and all)- but wouldn't it be easier to simply ignore new posters vs setting some rules?  Seems like administrative burden to deal with something common sense can solve.

it is not newbies, everyone starts out as one. but with contributions on posts, helping out on hunts etc... post build up.  The issue is the scammer/spammers posting a fake sale or wanting to take your money.

I belong to rokslide, ar15 and others and all seem to have some sort of post control for classifieds.  will that weed out all the scammers/spammers, no it wont, will it do a majority, heck yah.  Even the OG fammed AZ Bass Zone had spammers and crap.  I loved the post of someone selling fishing rods leaning up against the table and people would ask how much for the table, what does the couch GPS at, etc...funny sheeets.

CWT is more localized forum and is more open to all, but that invites the riff raff in.

Its no burden on admns, its a simple few clicks of the mouse one time in the admin section of a forum, and they never have to worry about it again.

yes easier for people to ignor pms than to set limits on pms. PMS are the problem. reason being lets say someone had a question in a non forsale section of the forum and a guy with the answer is new and wants to send his phone number to help the guy. he wouldnt be able to do it..

one of the best ways to get this fixed but it sucks for admins and mods is every new member should be held in que until a mod or admin can ok them to join. once the admin or mods ok them there good to go. on AZBZ I did it for a while ( I had no Mods) but it got to be a pain in the butt when I was busy or went out fishing a tourny for 2-3 day, hunting for a week etc etc.

I tried everything I dont like the post limit as I dont like rules on a forum..I tried it in the early years. To me people should have the common decency to post in the regular sections but people selling stuff dont care about what anyone thinks they just wanna make a buck.

the best way I have found to fix the problem was just being a Dick. if I saw someone making nothing but forsale section posts, I would edit there post and say something like. " I am only here to sell stuff, I am a complete scumbag and dont give 2 shits about the people on your website", or I would change there link so it went to a gay porn site. or one of my favoroites was in big bold letters on there posts type in " Its sucks to be me" "I'm Gay, I love men etc etc all kinds of things to do. then when they got pissed and send me an email or pm I would post it on there ad. but like I said I'm a Dick but hey it worked. when it didnt I sent them on a all expense's paid trip to Disney land.

when someones runs a politicaly correct forum those things dont usually fly so, you either add a 50 post limit before the forsale section opens up to them or live with it.

How about the dude selling the crap in his garage and 2 bongs that he called vases  that was a funny thread to. the what does it GPS at was great.

with the way forums are made now that SEO stuff on the URL(thread title in the URL) instead of a post number like back then anyone tying powder for sale will come up in yahoo search. thats what is attracting all the scammers. and people selling stuff. its great for getting your forum known and attracting users but the bad part it Attracts every seller and there brother was well.

arent bongs and weed legal no Del?  That due was just ahead of his times LOL.

Ar15.com makes you use a non "free" email address to sign in with, ie., must like cox.com or your own domain name email or a paid email service.

Moderating this sort of thing can be extremely burdensome, and putting in technical rules/parameters may or may not be an option depending on the hosting software, etc.

Buyers beware!!!!   Best defense against scammers is a little common sense and judgement by the users.

I love the hypocrisy of a lot of guys on this site.  Hard core right wingers that do not want any more laws or rules, UNTIL they think they should be warranted.  Remember when guys just had a little common sense and did not need big brother watching out for you on every move of your life.  FFS do not wire money to bangladesh for some cheap swaro's.  It's like, so many people's bullshitt meters no longer work because they haven't had to use them in so long.
