Jason Report post Posted August 7, 2003 I'm thinking about booking a Coues Deer hunt in Mexico next year or possibly a Sitka Blacktail hunt in Alaska. I've read allot about Coues Deer hunting down south and was hoping to get some feed back on if the Coues Deer hunting is really that good in Mexico from someone who has been there. I have heard that Dwane and Pusch Ridge are some of the best and have a friend who has booked a hunt through Cabelas for less money this fall but don't know what outfitter that is through and does have the option of taking a second deer for another $1,000. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks
coueshunter Report post Posted August 8, 2003 Jason, I hunted Mexico last year to complete my deer slam. Year before that I went to Kodiak and hunted sitka's and had a blast despite the bays being frozen over which made it tough to get to some of the better hunting spots. As far as Mexico, its the best place to go for maximizing the chance at a B&C buck. You need to be careful of who you book with to ensure they are not just a ranch with tags discounted. You will need to pay any decent outfitter 3500 - 4000.00 if you expect trophy quality. If not and you are hunting an OVERHUNTED ranch, you will see lots of deer but very few if any over 100" and come home disappointed. I am no expert but did alot of research on outfitters and asked many people like Duwane, Kirk, Jay Scott etc.....about what to expect, how to make the trip enjoyable and not a circus, what paperwork to fill out etc......I have no idea who cabelas may be using but can assure you that if its discounted then there is something suspicious. It costs the outfitter around 1500.00 to purchase the coues tag from the landowner. It cost 500.00 to pay the Mexican gov. for a gun permit if you are bringing your own. I think you see the math, the outfitter is left with 2000.00 to feed you, transport you, pay the guides and the rest. The only way for an outfitter to reduce the price is if he pays less for the tags and I will assure you any rancher who sells them below market probably doesnt have a quality ranch because people are lined up at 4000.00 to harvest a good buck from the established ranches. I expect the prices will continue to go up so be careful with any lowball prices.........Call Duwane, call Kirk and since they both have done this for years, get some references and see what the clients say. Another thing, having a bilingual guide is very helpful. Last year I hunted without a guide but with a ranch hand who helped and he spoke zero english. It was very very hard to communicate and if you have never hunted coues, I would caution against it.........hope some of this helps a bit. Send me a note if I can help in any other way....... www.environmentalfiltration@msn.com p.s. I would be happy to give you what info I have on Alaska if you need it.......Allen Taylor.........
