huntswnm Report post Posted August 6, 2008 What do you do if you are sitting in your stand and a thunderstorm rolls in? Rain and wind don't bother me, but how do you guys deal with lightning? I know what the obvious answer should be...... but whats everyone's opinion? Jeff
Browning'sCustomMeat Report post Posted August 6, 2008 I drive a ground rod at the base of the tree and run a bare wire and tie it in to the stand.......never really been brave enough to try it out. All kidding aside, I have no intension of hang'n round when there is lightning, never used to bother me, just lately can't stand it, I've become a wimp I guess. I am up and out of the tree when the lightning starts.... -Jeremy-
AzHunt Report post Posted August 6, 2008 I hate lightning when I am standing on the ground...much less sitting in a tree!!
Red Rabbit Report post Posted August 6, 2008 Carry a 1 iron in the pack and hold it up in the air when there is lightning. As any golfer knows, even God can't hit a 1 iron.
huntswnm Report post Posted August 6, 2008 Ok, Ok........ Thats kind of what i expected I am trying September hunt this year for the first time, but we are getting big lightning and rain storms here almost every afternoon. Seems like the best time would be right after the storm to be in the stand so maybe I will just walk back to the truck and wait for it to pass, then sneak back into the stand. jeff
Huntn coues Report post Posted August 7, 2008 I get down and run like Forest gump
jamaro Report post Posted August 7, 2008 How about a ground blind? Because when you are sneaking back they are probably also on the move..... J
jnobleinaz Report post Posted August 7, 2008 Anyone that sits in a treestand in a lightning storm is tempting mother nature a little too much and not to mention a dumba%%! The worst place to stand in lightning is under a tree and especially not in a tree. Just imagine the guy in a treestand, now imagine one of those pines that have been split down the middle from lightning, and now put them together. Don't want to sound sarcastic. huntswnm Report post Posted August 7, 2008 No, not sarcastic at all. I appreciate every ones opinion. Ground blind definately may be the way Jamaro, just have to see if we are still getting these rains that challenge those from Biblical times Thanks everyone, Jeff

mattys281 Report post Posted August 7, 2008 755Million pine trees. Only about twenty hit by lightning each year. . . odds are in your favor to sit there! I say go for it man! This is exactly right. The area I hunt in the early season is so overgrown that you can't get away from the trees, so I just make sure I'm not hanging my stand in the tallest one . I've sat right in my stand through every monsoon that's hit while I was hunting for the last two years and haven't been fried yet. This may be the year for it, but I kind of doubt it.
