Three Bar deer study

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I reported to you previously about the Three Bar mule deer study. The graduate student that is working on the project is looking for volunteers to come out and help locate, capture and collar MD fawns. Anyone interested should contact her directly to schedule a time. Might be nice to go as a group to help and have fun. Perhaps Aug 9-10 or Aug 16-17 would be good weekends for this?

here is her contact info.

Nicole Tatman

cell: 505.720.0489

email: ntatman@gmail.com

To read about the project, here is the link to the trip report I did on my last visit out there:

Come on, bring the family and dedicate a day or two to help on a wildlife project!!

Anyone interested in going this weekend? Maybe Fri night to Sat morning? I talked to Nicole and she said they get up early and search for fawns until about 10:30 am, then they are done for the day. So you can just make a quick morning of it if you want. Or stay a couple days. There is room at the three bar cabin with is fairly nice. So you don't even have to tent out. They have a generator there with electricity and I think they have water too.

Amanda'

I have some stuff I really need to get done at first AM

But I would much rather do that.

It has been a few years since I have been there.

( 10? Years)

Could you post directions for everyone (like me)

who might decide the lawn and trail cams can

wait another week.

The three bar cabin is located off the three bar road, which is off 188 along Roosevelt Lake. It's south of punkin center and north of where the big bridge over the salt river is by roosevelt.

It may be easiest to just meet Nicole and her crew as they drive from the three bar cabin to the study site to the south. So maybe meet at the intersection of 188 and three bar road at 0430 any morning. They work everyday.

here are a couple maps, not sure if they will look good enough for you to see.

Amanda, look forward to working with you this weekend. For those who might show up I'll be camped in the Cholla Camp Ground in a 5th wheel with COUESWHITETAIL.COM accross the back. The WELCOME is always open in my camp. :D

TJ and I were out at the three bar early this morning. Nicole and another grad student (John) and a technician were out there also. We checked the radio signals on about 20 does and 15 fawns. All were alive and well, so we didn't have to go find the carcass and determine cause of death. Also, no new fawns were born this morning so we didn't get to go chase them down and put a collar on them. However, it was still a very nice morning.

If anyone wants to go out there and help on the project. You can just show up or call in advance. If you just show up, you can meet at the three bar cabin the night before or at the intersection of 188 and three bar road at 0430 any morning. We were done relatively early this morning, but it depending on the births and mortality, they sometimes work until about 1030 am.

I think TJ wil be camped at Cholla campground until Tuesday and he is going out in the mornings to check radios with Nicole. So if you want, you can meet up with him also. I think another guy from the site is going tomorrow am also.

here are some pics of TJ doing the radio telemetry. Notice the shirt!! (oh and sorry my camera takes crummy pics in low light....I had to lighten these up so you could see anything).

Thought I might post I won't be camped at Cholla until Tuesday as Amanda posted. I did tell her that but I had to come back home to the aircondition. !00deg in the camper is a little to much for me along with a sunburn.

Nicole and her bunch are doing some really meaningful work and could really use some help if anyone is interrested. I was amazed at how they do the things they do with all the modern technology. We didn't get a chance to capture any fawns but it is like Amanda said. They check every day for new borns and it's on the deer's terms.

I wimped out with the heat and think I just might be starting to show some old age symptoms. :( I will be buying a bigger generator to run my air that's for sure.
