My grandpa brought  this home from ww2. I would  love to find out what it is.

Thats cool as crap. we used to see alot of these types in Japan when I lived there in the early 60's to Late 70's at yard sales.

My guess its not Japanese per say its more than one of the islands in the south pacific  The Darker skin and the red I'm going to guess and say closer to indian maybe tahiti?

The islands had a ton of shrines

He was in the Philippines  and was in Japan  after they dropped  the bombs. Im pretty sure he told me he traded a pack of smokes for it in Japan.

forgot about Philippines thats a very good possibility.

reason I say islands is because of the white painted nails is usually a sign of a tribe so to speak which was in the islands, even if its worth nothing its cool to have as shelf piece.

Tia land and bannock where a place that had lots of these pcs for sale. Mom used to go there from time to time and pick stuff up back in the 60's and of coarse dad always brought this type of stuff home after a night at the bar drinking with his buddies as a peace offering

Its Japanese. The writing says "made in Japan".

Good find, I looked for a bit earlier and couldnt find anything close. only thing I could come up with was the red robe was indian

My ex mother in law was Buhddist by way of Japan. We hosted the in laws in our home for years. They had a Durma character figurine and all the Buhddas, Butsudans and Hello Kitties .... Just looked to me like another Buhddas, he came in many shapes and sizes

kutani figure of bodhidharma type into a search engine shows a few, but nothing with the japanese writing on it, and the eyebrows are different. you seem to have a rare piece or one that Unique forsure.

it may or maynot be worth something as I wasnt really looking at the monatary value just the coolness factor.

It's early  20th century Japanese pop art. Nice piece.
