zeiss conquest reticle

Recommended Posts

I don't post much but I have been lurking for a long time before I signed up. So I guess I have been taking much more than I have been contributing... ;) I really think this is a great site with a lot of great people!

After reading alot of opinions about the various scopes I was about sold on buying the zeiss conquest 4.5-14 44mm rapid-z 800 scope until I found out the reticle wasn't necessarily designed for a .270 (at least according to their website). They call out the rapid-z 600 for the 270 which is only available in the 3.5-10 conquest. I have a leupold 3-9 now and have been pleased but I really liked the idea of a 14x for those farther shots.

So is there any one that has used the rapid-z 800 reticle on a 270 or similar caliber? And if so, what did you think? I don't think the trajectory for the 270 is much different than the calibers they do recommend for it so maybe it wont make a difference.

The other option is to get the zeiss conquest 4.5-14 44mm with a "normal" reticle (z-plex) or get the 3.5-10.

thanks!

It doesnt really matter if it was designed for the 270... Shoot it and see where they hit.... 800 is pretty dang far shot for any rifle..

The balistic type reticles are too busy for me.

I opt to go with the "normal" reticle, in this case the Z-Plex.

You have the option of getting custom turrets made for what you shoot.

That way you just click the turret to the appropriate yardage and aim dead on.

Hope that makes sense.

I have no intention of even practicing at 800 yards let alone shooting at an aminal at that distance. I just think the higher magnification will help in shooting distance like 400 yards or so. Like I said I don't want or need the rapid z 800, I would rather have the rapid z 600 but they don't offer it in the 4.5-14. And I don't really want to spend that kind of money to see if it works with the 270 and have it not :o

I really don't know alot about turrets but it does sound nice. Can you buy a conquest with turrets?

I am very comfortable with a normal duplex reticle but I thought it might be fun to have a fancy BDC reticle if I am upgrading my scope anyway.

Thanks

The scope will work fine with a 270... you just need to play with it to see what lines hit where, ya know?

You can buy Zeiss with turrets or you can send them back to Zeiss to get turrets installed. I have one that came with turrets and one that I sent to zeiss to get turrets in stalled.. Cost is $115 for both turrets and return shipping.

firstcoueswas80, what model and power did you buy that had turrets? Do you perfer the turrets to the BDC reticles? Maybe this is a silly question but you have one or the other not both, right? So in other words, if I wanted turrets than I would look for a 4.5-14 conquest with zplex and turrets.

thanks for all your help.

LC,

Here's a good post about the Rapid Z with links to the calculator. The Calculator should tell you how the hash marks will match with your ammo.

Rapid Z

Be aware that most ballistic reticles will require you to be on the highest power.

If you use a drop chart and turrets, you can be at any power. Being able to go to a lower magnification may be an advantage at very first or last light. It will only take 10 seconds to read the chart and turn the turrets after you range the animal.

thanks RR, I am really liking the idea of turrets now but I can't seem to find any model that specifically comes with turrets instead of rapid z. I am really ignorant when it comes to how turrets are used too -- are the turrets built in with the elevation and windage knobs? How exactly are they used?

LC,

The Conquest 4.5-14x50 AO comes with turrets and the regular Z-Plex reticle.

Another scope to consider would be the Bushnell Elite 6500 http://www.bushnell.com/general/riflescope...n=General%20Use and the Leupold 4-5-14 with M1 turrets http://leupold.com/tactical/products/scope...14x50mm-lrt-m1/ . Leupold can put the M1 or a custom BDC turret on a VXIII scope through their custom shop. The Mark IV is available with MI turrets

Maybe I will take a look at the 4.5-14 50mm. Now the only issue is mounting a big scope like that on my gun without having to go too high with the rings. The things I'll do for a shot I might not ever take...

I would stay with the 44 bell as opposed to moving up to the 50.

Higher rings don't fit well with me.

Get the 44 and order the turrets for your load to go along with it.

just my opinion.

As R.R. suggested to me,

and I am glad I took his advise.

Burris Signature Series, Med. height.

They lined up perfect without having to

get offset inserts.

When it came time for me, I did the 44mm Zeiss, sent it for turrets, and put it in Talleys.

Your flowers are looking good Casey. :D

enjoying the info here guys keep it coming. I was looking into upgrading my scope to one of the mentioned but after shooting my deer last year at about 400 yards with my 3X9 simmons and all the other toys I've been buying and not to mention a new kitchen for the wife, it might be a while till I can convince my wife to let me get a new scope.
