What would you do for your Coues?

Recommended Posts

How far do you go for your Coues deer? What effort do you apply for that trophy Coues? Would you climb the highest mountains? Would you serch the Far reaches of the earth, to the ends of the world?

Hear are my two boys on a recent scouting trip during "Sunrise at the Edge of the World"!

I am getting excited for the season!

Lets see your working pictures and hear your tacktics. The blood sweat and tears that bring us to those special moments you can only experience on a hunt! Especially a Coues Deer hunt!

Back in October, AzpackNhorns and I went out looking for a coues for him... Well, wouldnt you know it, I glassed up a buck as deep and up in the canyon as possible.. Away we went. And of course, he dumped him right were he stood at the top of the canyon... Oh man, was that fun! You cant really see too much, but this is the very top of the canyon and the buck is laying there dead with my camera zoomed all the way in.

I told you he thumped him! ( As he lay)

Two tired hunters! The pack out was interesting.. I have NEVER cut a deer in half until this buck. This is the first deer I have ever had to cut in half!

Well......... I am not as fanatical about Coues hunting as some of you ;) but I have always been a hard huntin, gung ho, up and over the mountain and then over and around three more mountains and then sweat it back to camp in a completely worn out fashion and swearing I'll never do that again, except after a good nights sleep, I end up doing it all again the next day.

With advancing age and a chronic back problem I have resolved myself into hunting smarter instead of wearing myself out. So a couple years ago I went and bought a pair of "25 x 100" binoculars and along with my "12 x 50's" will spend more time glassing from good areas and moving around and glassing more and targeting springs and water hole areas.

Great photo Lance!!! I wonder if that will be in Coues Deer Celebration 6??? ;) You take such great photos!

Well, I am hunting Unit 27 again this year and Scott Adams has a tag also. So we have been talking about doing a backpack trip. Unfortunately, it's like a 5 mile hike in to the base of the mtn we want to hunt! 5 miles of sweat in Oct just to start hunting! I hope we get a cool October! Maybe I will convince him we need horses or to at least take his goats in with us!

Well.... I'v never been much on pictures before the kill, so I don't have many pics of me or anyone else working for it. I stumbled on this pic of a sheep hunt a few years back... i am standing on a bluffy mountain top about 2-3 miles from camp after looking for sheep all morning. I circled my camp (trailer & wall tent) in red and where we eventually harvested our #1 ram on opening evening..... anbout 4-5 miles beyond camp in blue. As we caped that ram we stood on the highest peak for over a mile in any direction..... the feeling of being on top of the world..... priceless! ;)

I intend to try and get more pics this year..... I am reading Jimbo's book on how to Juggle Finding Big Critters and Still Find Time to Take Pictures.   :P

I will have to admit I take hunting most big game pretty serious. If I have an elk hunt in September, you will find me hiking north mountain most mornings with my pack on in the high heat. If I think there is a deer, bear, or elk at the top of a high mountain, I will hike up there to try and find it. I like to have a good time on my hunts, but will push myself to the limit in order to harvest one. Hopefully I can find some pics from some of my WT hunts. David
