Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 27, 2008 The 180 and 150 Nosler E-tips are factory loaded by Winchester for the 30-06. They will both keep 2000 fps out to 500 yards for reliable expansion. Would be nice to put some wet phone books at 700 yards and see how the bullets expand. The following is from the Winchester site. http://winchester.com/products/catalog/cfr...n=5&type=71 180 data is first, and 150 data second Cartridge 30-06 Springfield Bullet Type E-Tip, E-Tip Bullet Wt. Cheapest I have seen is at Graf & Sons. http://www.grafs.com/ I am developing handloads now for both the 150 and 180 E-tips in my 300 WSMs to use on coues and elk. I figure with 100% weight retention, the 150 E-Tip will be fine on elk (considering the 150 Partition in the 270 Win that retains 65% is used successfully without qualm) Doug~RR
Hooked_on_Coues Report post Posted July 27, 2008 If you don't handload, shoot some Hornady Light Magnums in 150 grn and see what they do. In my Browning 78 they are printing .6" 5 shot groups! MV (mean) is 3100fps with a SD of 17. I found these rounds and quit reloading '06's. I have tried the 165's, which shoot well, but they don't group with the 150's. '06 is what God carries when he is tired of using his 6.5x284.......
donniedent Report post Posted July 27, 2008 I second that one.... The 150 Light Mag Interbonds have the best ballistics of Hornadays '06 line-up Donnie P.S. Hornadays 7mm mag Heavy Mag 139 loads are insane. Awsome all around 7mag load!
ruffcountry Report post Posted July 29, 2008 Give the Hornady Light Mags a try . My 06 likes the 165 grainers . I never tried the 150's because the 165's dang near all went thru the same hole . I get sub moa groups out of my sav 110 . They shoot pretty flat too , I missed a good buck a couple years ago because I over estimated range and shot right over him .. There isn't anything wrong with 270 or 06 but I'd say 06 is a little more versatile.
.270 Report post Posted July 30, 2008 you need to know the twist rate of your barrel. .30 cal is real picky when it comes to bullet weights. most of the time it's real hard to shoot light or heavy bullets from an '06. they usually have rilfes cut for meduim weight bullets. 150's and 165's. Kaffer62 Report post Posted August 7, 2008 Ask the old timers about how far they can shoot the 06' with a military background or a hunting back ground You just might be amazed. I am no old timer....Yet, and no military backround but I attest how accurate the 30-06 is. Gatorade cap...400 yards.... 10mph crosswind. DEAD CAP!..... Gr8 WHT JR was even there to witness.
