Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 25, 2008 For that elk and possible a buff later on, then how about a 338 Win Mag? Wide variety of factory ammo or brass-n-bullets for reloading is available. Should have a good selection of rifle makers to choose from. Good enough wrt Energy and trajectory for those 400 yard cross canyon shots. Not the recoil like a 338 Ultra Mag. Or you could upgrade your 06 with a nice stock and scope.

Bucks_N_Yotes Report post Posted July 25, 2008 What about going with a .243 and getting closer to the elk? All ready have a .243, and its a great round, but the setup I have is to heavy to be toting around.

Bucks_N_Yotes Report post Posted August 5, 2008 Great imput! I ended up buying the .300 WSM. Lots of time and reading and thats what I came up with. Now what shoud I put on top for optics? I have been puting burris 3.5-10-50s on my past few rifles and have had no problems and love them, but I am thinking of trying something else.
azbownunter22 Report post Posted August 6, 2008 I don’t know anyone that has one but the round that intrigues me as a primary elk gun is the 325 WSM. It compares very favorably to both the 300 Win Mag and 338 Win Mag. I would imagine the cost of factory loads wouldn’t allow you to shoot it too often but if you hand load I believe it would make an awesome Elk Gun. One problem is there aren’t too many manufacturers that chamber the 325 WSM – Kimber, Browning and Winchester for the most part. All the others calibers mentioned are great as well. I have a 300 WSM. I’m excited to see how it shoots the Federal 130 grain Barnes TSX bullets – 3500 ft/sec at muzzle. If it shoots those well, it’s going to make a great WT load. Let me know how that shoots, I read an article about it and was curious. Thanks,
ajohunter Report post Posted August 6, 2008 I shoot a 300 remington ultra mag and I feel its the greatest gun on the market at this time. I have been shooting my 300 Ultra Mag since 2000. In my opinion it is one of the best all around calibers you can get. I have taken bobcats, coyotes, coues, mule deer, pronghorn, and a few elk with it. And all have been taken with 180gr Swift Sciroccos.....
