Good ole days on ammo prices

Recommended Posts

Dad bought me my first deer rifle at Smitty’s on Shea and Tatum circa 1984. He used to chuckle about there selection from a loaf of bread and filling a prescription to dove and quail rounds. Awesome store.

Phx Shooters Supply was a couple of doors down from Phx Fishing Supply on 16th St. Wasn't that a AZ Sportsman on Camelback and 7th either St or Ave?

I bought a shock absorbing shoulder pad at PSS before embarking on a dove hunt near Navajoa, Mex. I was sure glad I did, too. I think I was in the fishing place only once to buy some saltwater gear.

After the DelRes closed the store on Northern, Mickey opened a small one on 16th St. and continued to service reels and Coleman stuff. Perhaps it was Phx Fishing Supply that he took over??

Yup, waterbed joint on NE corner of either 7th or 19th ave. & camelback. We bought ours there in the early 1970s. But I'm thinking Camelback Guns was actually between 7th and 19th because Tom and I often went to lunch at Neptune's Table, which was on the north side of CB at about 7th ave. to the right of CBGs. I also remember a fairly large, multi-floor hotel across from Cameback Guns. Dave, who worked there, always had a spotting sccope set up to peer into the rather large windows. But I never looked through it.  🙄

That waterbed store used to have commercials on TV all the time, we bought ours there in 82 or 83 and some fruniture.

I believe my Wife was a waitress at neptunes, but said it was slow she went over to k'S down the street on the east side of central. at least I think it was K's  I miss the good restaurants we had back in the 80s. these national franchise places SUCK

The only Del Re store I remember was on Central either Southern or Baseline. Pretty much had to be packing to get to the front door. There was a Mexican resturant in that area La Casa Rivera that I was in a couple of times. The chili's there would just about take the hide off your tongue, mine anyway.

So who remembers the Co-op that was downtown. I can't remember if it was called Phoenix Co-op or Farmer's Co-op, etc? They tore it down when they built Bank One Ballpark (now Chase Field), and a salvage dealer in Glendale bought all the old building materials. I bought two 28' - 4"x18" gluelams that support my roof over the archway to my room addition. I also bought all of the pine paneling -- a stack about 4' high and 6' wide of 6' to 14'  long boards that varied in width from 6" to 12". That stack became many cabinet doors, drawer fronts in kitchen, bath and hall and all my baseboard and door molding throughout the house. Here are samples from my fully remodeled kitchen

The one on Central was Al DelRe's. His son, Al Jr. ran it for a longtime after Al retired. I sometimes bought waterdogs from there, and Al Jr. also fished with me for pike in Colo. So did Danny Westfall.

I remember both Fedmart and Govway, but I can't recall which one was on W. Indian School between 35th ave. & 43rd.  One of the owners of Fedmart was Sol Price, who later started Price Club -- now Costco!

At one time back in the 60s Neptune’s had guys on white Arabian horses dressed as knights that meet you at the entrance to the parking lot.

Yes, at dinner time if I recall but not at lunch when we went to eat there.
