MEET MR. GRIZZLY - A Saga on the Passing of the Grizzly Bear by Montague Stevens relates the memoirs of a one-armed Englishman who ranched, fought Apaches, and mostly hunted bears with hounds in New Mexico, circa 1882-1900. Educated at Cambridge, Stevens was one of the most literate chroniclers of New Mexico's rural history. A great old west memoir, and a superb hound and horse training book. His well reasoned comments on natural history, dog training, and the life of an early day cattleman are an invaluable reference. The 6"x9" paperback book, published by High-Lonesome Books in 1987, is 310 pages of great story telling and b&w historic photos. My copy is in excellent, unread condition.

every time i drive through the radio VLA on 60 in new mexico i am filled with wonder that all that and more was the Stevens' Place.  ranching and roping and chasing griz with one arm and some backbone.  he gave up all hunting after his entire hound pack died of coyote poison-the lead died in this arms.

great stories.  Montague Stevens and Ben Lilly-two men who could not have been more different yet shared the same passions.

Some good tales, for sure. I had read a library copy of Meet the Mr. Grizzly before I bought the book, and then it just sat there like a shelf queen.
