mikejr112 Report post Posted November 8, 2020 Hi all, I am going on my first ever Elk hunt with my wife at the end of the month in 6a. We do not have a trailer so we will be tent camping. I would like to gather some tips and tricks for cold wether camping. Unfortunately I have lost some of my memories of cold weather camping in the boy scouts as a kid in the midwest. Any tips would be helpful to help make our first Elk hunt an enjoyable one! Thanks, -Mike

Ohthatguy Report post Posted November 8, 2020 Don't expect a sleeping bag rated at 20° to keep you comfortable at 20°.
jknister Report post Posted November 8, 2020 I have a buddy heater and had a hose made so I can use a 5 gallon propane tank that I keep outside the tent. I can run it all night on high for several nights, plus cook and still have plenty of propane left over. One time I ran into trouble at around 7500 feet where the heater kept shutting off. Low oxygen sensor I think. That year I just brought in the coleman stove and ran that.

Pat Report post Posted November 8, 2020 I keep the propane tank inside the tent to help keep it from freezing when it gets below half full. Works good for me. Pat
krash73 Report post Posted November 8, 2020 Plan on taking an extra layer for sleeping. Take a couple wool blankets just in case the weather changes and it gets colder.
