Sportsmans Warehouse in Goodyear to Close

Recommended Posts

A call to the Sportsmans Warehouse in Goodyear confirmed that their last day is Aug 3. Inventory will be sent to other stores. Sad to hear for their customers and employees.

Previously I was told SW is opening 5 new stores and closing 3. Guess Goodyear is one of the 3. Do not know how viable the proposed SW stores in Flagstaff and Prescott are.

That SUCKS! I have spent a lot of money in that place. It's within a 1/2 mile of my house. Guess I had better visit a few times in the next couple of weeks.

That sucks, that store was very close to where I work and very convenient.

Cabela's a few miles away from that store has to hurt.

Unfortunately Cabelas probably did hurt that SW location but I really shopped the two stores for completely different things. SW was better for having some things in stock and had better service, Cabelas was good for the same things I would have ordered from the catalog but the prices aren't great, the service usually sucks, and the bargain cave is a joke.

I've been to Cabela's and now Bass Pro Shop. Three trips to Cabela's and I haven't bought anything except lunch, spent several hundred dollars at my one trip to Bass Pro, and everything else I've bought the last couple of years has come from Sportsmans Warehouse. Can't imagine why people still go to Cabela's.

I often wonder how many redundant retail stores say open.....

It is sad to see a SW close... that is the one SW store I had never been to.

I'm sorry to hear this news, although I'm not surprised to hear it. I frequently shop at the Goodyear SW, but I have often wondered how they stay in business. Since the Cabela's opening, store traffic has been sparse every time I've shopped there. I'll definitely miss the store.

I also think it has to do with the owner.. Stu... he is notorious for looking in his bank and saying "Hey, I have 1.5 million in the bank(or what ever)... lets build a new store..." Then, the next month he cant pay his bills... It is remarkable to me that SW has stayed open since 1986.

I hope it doesn't effect the opening of a store in Prescott! We don't have a good store like that up here and I think our market could support it.

TAM, i think you will still see your store in Prescott Valley--in fact, i bet a lot of the merchandise they have at the Goodyear place will be in that store--just a guess but i think it is a good business move. Cabela's and Bass pro will probably never build in a city that isn't the size of Phoenix but SW can and will do well in that market. Big 5 will see a lot of customers go to SW now.

TAM,

Have they broken ground for the Prescott store? There is a sign up here in Flag for a future SW, but I can't see Flag giving it enough business to succeed.

I am bummed to see this store go, the fishing folks were helpful and it was just a one mile detour on the way home from work to pickup the items I needed, very convient. I actually just bought a gunsafe from them earlier this week and they told me than they were closing, Take Care, JLG.

There is no sign that I know of for the store in Prescott Valley, just word of mouth rumors. As far as I know construction has not started either. They are just finishing a new Home Depot and they are in the middle of building a new Sams Club right across the street. I believe that Sportsmans Warehouse will be built in this same vacinity, but that's just a guess.

I agree if it goes through it will put the hurt on the Big 5 Sports which is also in that same vacinity.

I wonder if the big wigs at SW have ever considered building a scaled down version of the normal sized stores for a smaller market like Flagstaff or Prescott? Perhaps 75-80% of the size of the regular stores with fewer inventory, employees, and square footage to pay for. I know there is a lot of inventory at the stores in Phoenix that they could cut back on and probably not ever effect there bottom line. Stuff like the kayak's and goose decoys. Just another one of my many brilliant marketing ideas.
