What if I mentioned it's possibly a Trapdoor?

Blow-up of the action.

The actual orientation of the original photo.

With the exception of the dark hat, Custer, in 1873, wears the outfit he is thought to have worn at the Little Bighorn (he removed the buckskin jacket prior to the fight). He also holds a Remington Rolling Block rifle that he used in the battle.

From Guns magazine article:

mm-0317-3

A Remington Rolling Block .50-70 Sporting Rifle possibly similar to this one was
carried to the Little Bighorn Battle by Custer himself. It was never recovered.

And...

Looks like a rolling block to me. Trapdoors had side mounted hammers. Cool pic

Yup more I study it I tend to agree.

Funny thing is, I downloaded the pic from an article on Custer and his sportorized M1866 Trapdoor.

Custer supposedly used the same rifle to shoot this bear, but there was abit of controversy involved. This is a good article about that hunt:

Who Shot Custer's Bear?

Custer kneels behind a huge grizzly bear splayed out on a rock, his Indian Scout Bloody Knife close behind him on his right, one of Custer’s beloved Scotch staghounds prostate with exhaustion, and his private assistant and Colonel Ludlow to his left.

It was killed in Yellowstone, Wyoming, according to one photo caption. Thus, it would be a Rocky Mt. elk, same as here.

Who is the dude in the middle?

EDIT. Nevermind, I found it. Grand Duke Alexis

That duke seems to have been credited with the destruction of the Russian Navy during their war with Japan.

Looks like a decent mass elk rack laying in the grass behind the one dudes shoulder.
