BGHUNTER00 Report post Posted July 12, 2008 Hello. My brother and I will be heading to AZ this Jan for our first coues hunt. I figured you guys were the coues guru's so I thought I would start asking some questions. We would like to do a coues/javelina combo if possible. We have looked at 22/23/33/34 as our best bet, would you agree? Are all Jan archery coues tags OTC? What are the best dates for an archery rut hunt? Can you guys give us beginners some pointers and tips. I have been elk hunting several times in the mts so I'm not a beginning hunter, just new to the coues. We will be traveling from IN by plane and renting a vehicle. Should we plan on picking an area, hiking in a few miles and staying in that general area all week, or would it be more beneficial to try different places each day? We have never been to AZ and have really no idea how to hunt these guys, but from what we have read it sounds like fun (not to mention challenging). Tree stands? Can you find water holes very easy? I know it's a lot of questions, but if there is anything you guys can help with I sure would appreciate it. Thanks a bunch. Troy
skyhawkbowhunter Report post Posted July 12, 2008 If u want to do a combo for javelina and coues I would go to 36b there is a high density of both . Ull need some good glass.10x42 and above prefferably with a tripod. in 36b u wont need to back pack. get a map to find waterholes, canyons, and other stuff. There are more people on this site who can give u a lot better info than i can, just tryin to help. Welcome and good luck on ur hunt
COUESAZ Report post Posted July 12, 2008 Maybe try one of the outfitters on this site and set up a self guided hunt with them. They can get you all set up in a good area. Or try one of the scout srvices also they will scout for you and give you all the info you need. I have done both of them with our guide service when we had it and it helped out of state hunters with hunts in the past.
GameHauler Report post Posted July 12, 2008 Have you considered a guide? Going to be tough going at it cold. You will have to draw a Javi tag I think the deadline for the draw is in October Good luck

Red Rabbit Report post Posted July 15, 2008 For the combo with Javelina, you will likely need to consider drawing a javelina tag a unit with 100% draw odds, and those will be the southern units 33, 34, 36 and not 22, 23. Archery Coues tags will be OTC. You can check this HUNT ARIZONA book for draw odds. http://www.azgfd.gov/pdfs/h_f/hunting/Hunt_AZ_2008.pdf I would camp from the back of the rental truck and hike everyday. Temps may average from 35*-65*, with a chance of some precipitation once a week. You can get data on weather.com for the closet city you are hunting near. Bring some nice binos to put on a tripod to glass javelina on the sunny slopes in the mornings. Spot and stalk is fun, and they may respond to a varmint call. http://www.biggamehunt.net/sections/Javeli...a_09160112.html The coues and javelina habitas overlap.
