Julie is good at finding sheds!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

As a biologist, I do a lot of fieldwork and I have been taking my dogs with me (Julie and Molly). Julie is the new, young dog that I got several months ago. Anyway, she has pleasantly surprised me with her skull/antler/bone finding abilities!

This shed she didn't find, but she likes to play with at home:

here is one of the first things she found on a walk with me. It's a gray fox skull. Looks like someone shot it in the top of the head and left it out there.

here is a WT deer leg bone she found in the Pinals. She ran along with it in her mouth for quite some time. She was thrilled. We were up there recently and though it's a couple months later, she still goes and picks it up when we are there.

And here is a WT skull she found during a night hike:

And just the other day she ran up to us with this nice WT antler in the Catalinas. I was so proud of her!! I think this must be from one of the bucks that were on that video I made from all the trail cam pics up there.

And here is an elk shed she found on the San Carlos. We tried to encourage her to carrying it along but she wouldn't carry it too far. But at least she found it!

Those of you that went to the Marshall Lake campout saw Julie with her elk leg bone that she was so proud to show everyone. And she recently found a WT doe skull that I didn't get a pic of either. She also found a coyote carcass.

anyway, you guys got any pics of your dogs and what they have found this summer?

Julie has definitely showed more interest and ability in finding and retrieving interesting stuff than my other dogs have. We try to make a big fuss whenever she finds something so that hopefully she will continue to do so.

Those are some very nice looking friends you have there, it looks like they have a real nose for finding all that bone.

I love my dog, but I have to keep a real eye on her, because she hates other dogs(especially coyotes) and always wants to terrorize the local wildlife. She loves people. You will get to meet her if you make it to the party.

Yes, she is doing good! But here is a mulie rack she walked within a couple feet of and didn't acknowledge.

But this thing has been there for probably a decade, so little to no scent left on it. Same as some nearby bear bones.

Thanks for sharing Amanda. I bet them finds that you say have been there for some time are hard to leave behind. I know the San Carlos don't allow you to take them. Looks as though your dogs really enjoy being out there with you. Great pics. :)

She probably had a sister. I guess it was a local breeder that she came from. Believe it or not, I ended up with her because the guy that bought her said she flunked hunting school!!! The only problem with this dog is that she seems to have no fear of anything. The other day she leaped off a 15 foot cliff. Scared me to death, but she survived fine. She has also run full speed into barbed wire fences and suffered no damage.

I was actually thinking the other day when she was up on some cliff wall that she and ol' Hap would be good hunting buddies if they spent time chasing lions together! She is fearless and loves cliffs for some reason. She seems to think in 3D more than any other dog I know. I was picturing that time when Hap had that lion cornered and he was way out on that ledge.

For those of you that don't know Hap, it's a great lion dog (owned by Josh's dad I believe). here is the pic of him cornering that lion on the ledge.

here is something she found yesterday. It's a rock squirrel that has been turned inside out and devoured by something. It's not as nice as an antler, but you just never know what she will find.

Very cool Amanda! That is neat that Julie finds so many things with you and is able to accompany you so often.

I've lost track of how many actual bones my dog Ranger has found and brought over to me. He found this antler when we were out over fourth of July weekend. Please forgive him that it is from a mule deer... :)

Well, as tempting as that offer is Lark, I think I will stick with Julie. But what are some of Bean's "wonder" characteristics? I bet that burro is quite the character.
