Kilimanjaro Report post Posted July 6, 2008 Got up at 3AM on Thurs. to beat the heat and crowds and did a leg burner up Mt. Wrightston in the Santa Ritas as fast as I could before I had to be at work by 11!! Saw a few deer and a whole slew of gobblin' Goulds jakes! I'd make a few yelps, and they'd fire off over and over.. Guess they didnt get the memo that summer has set in.. ran into this little guy on the way down.. he wasnt scared of me in the least and he let me get within 3ft of him.. What kind of owl are these?? He looked just like the ones in your video.
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted July 6, 2008 Man, you are some kind of stud running up the mountain before work. Nice! Looks like it took a redbull to get you back down in time?? Yes, it is the same kind of owl. That's a mexican spotted owl. And by the looks of the shape of the tips of his tail feathers, I would say he is a first year bird, meaning he was born last summer. That's a cool find! If you want, PM me the details on the location. Most likely he doesn't have a breeding territory and is a floater, but he might have a territory right where you found him. Too bad you didn't pack any mice with you! Cool that those gould's were still gobblin' too. I have been seeing lots of jake merriam's and they have been pretty quiet. Thanks for the pics! Kilimanjaro Report post Posted July 7, 2008 Amanda, that bird was just below the saddle between the peak and Florida canyon. I'm not sure if it's correct, but we've always called that saddle Apache Saddle. Anyways, he was chilling right in that area!!
