I’m a rabid free-marketeer but these repeated ammo shortages (to the point of unavailability) are making me wonder.

In a properly functioning free market, I’d expect at least one of two things to happen.  I’d expect that demand exceeding production would cause in increase in production until supply met the demand.  Or, I’d expect the retail price of ammo to increase which would put downward pressure on demand until it met the supply.  (Or a combo of both.)

I know people are buying ammo to make themselves feel good (insert whatever reason you want but the bottom line is that possessing ammo makes them feel better).  But I also know that having money in their pocket makes people feel good too.

Economically rational people (a fiction, I know, because emotions are involved) would buy ammo until the marginal cost (measured in dollars) exceeds the marginal benefit (measured in the good feeling of knowing you have ammo).   At that point, economically rational people would stop buying ammo.  The sweet spot where the marginal cost and marginal benefit intersect is market equilibrium where supply meets demand and there’d be ammo available for those who are willing to pay the price instead of empty shelves.

It’s not like the toilet paper issue.  The ammo thing has happened numerous times over many years.  So it’s not like it’s unforeseeable.

Here’s to hoping Hornady adds a shift at the ammo factory.

Perhaps somehow related to the effect of C-19 on production for this most recent one??? 🤷‍♂️

Ammo manufacturers were producing cartridges at peak numbers prior to the Covid lockdowns. Then you had disruptions in manpower, supply lines and distribution.

It's an election year and you have a major political party promising its followers to take the citizens guns away. Add to that the annual attacks on guns and ammo each time there's a shooting and the opposition's results are predictable.

Those opposed to buying up stores of ammo call it hoarding. Those buying up the available ammo believe they are either hedging or preparing.

Next came the civil unrest which always causes weapons and ammo to fly off the shelves. But unlike the previous years of ammo shortages, the riots have driven first time gun buyers into the market.

40% of the guns sold this summer went into the hands of first time firearm buyers. With those guns went the ammo to feed them.

Not only does the newbie gun buyer put a strain on supplies, the fledgling shooters think the higher prices on ammo are the norm and are perfectly content to shell out the extra money needed to protect themselves and family.

One thing the major ammo makers are agreeing on is the current situation isn't ending anytime soon. Some cartridge manufacturers say that even with a pro gun presidential win this November to help normalize the market, it could be 2022 before we see shelves stocked back to 2019 levels. But even so, don't look for 2019 prices.

So when it gets back to normal, where do you like to buy ammo. Years ago, a gun builder in Idaho told me that he purchased ammo in pallet quantities but you could get essentially the same price at Wally World by the box (for your high use rounds like 9,45,556,22). Since their left turn, where should a guy go to pay non panic prices (again, once the TP panic subsides)? Online there is gunbot and ammo seek, but you have to consider shipping costs. My guess would be the big box outdoor stores where I buy my hunting rounds.
This is a hypothetical question of course, due to the tragic boating accident I no longer have a need for ammo.

I have had a unique situation occur not once but twice in the last three years.

Two people I never met committed suicide due to either mental or physical decline. Both had substantial gun and ammo collections and both had families associated with mine and Ive been privy to a lot of ammo. In total.not hundreds or thousands of rounds but hundreds of thousands.

I bought what I could afford from the grieving familys and have put some here in the classifieds.

Read yesterday that Remington was trying to sell off their ammo side to keep them from wheezing further in bankruptcy court.  Might affect current production, might not.
