azhunter23 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 I think that I already mentioned that I drew a unit 8 archery bull tag. I am now interested in purchasing a ground blind big enough to sit with my kids ( 1 at a time) and have plenty of room to shoot. I don't want to spend a ton of cash because I plan on leaving it at a water source starting at the beginning of September. I have found a few cheap ones but was looking for some reviews. I only plan on using it for this season. The one I was leaning on getting is the Turret©-XL Hunting Ground Blind, I was unable to find any reviews. Any help appreciated. Huntn coues Report post Posted July 2, 2008 What are the dimensions? I have an Ameristep blind that is about 5' 6 " wide and tall and that works just fine for two people. Check out Sportsmans guide (www.sportsmansguide.com). Their prices are hard to beat. Sorry but I have not had a chance yet to sit the Turret.
azhunter23 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Sorry here are the specs. Found it on ebay for under a $
Huntn coues Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Looks like I might have to try one of those. Here is a link to sp guide ...http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/browse/browse.aspx?c=12&s=412 looks like they have one similar for 79 smackers.
tjhunt2 Report post Posted July 2, 2008 At that price you better buy it. Size is similar to the Ameristep Brickhouse that sells for $124 at Sportsman Wharehouse. I have a double bull but have used the brickhouse and like it for the money. Good Luck! TJ
akuritone Report post Posted July 2, 2008 A couple guys on Archery Talk said these are good for the money. They arent as large as the one you listed but seems like it would work. Supposed to be decent quality material. http://www.coverthunting.com/fnimall/products.phtml Jeff
TLH Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Have you thought about building your ground blind with the materials around the water hole? You could build one and leave it and the worst that could happen is someone might tear it down---but if you plan on leaving your ground blind that long before the season starts you might as well get ready for it to be gone--i am sorry to say that but that is how it is now a days. Schmitty Report post Posted July 2, 2008 Every tank in 8 already had some semblance of a blind or two built on them already. You can save your $ and your back and go ahead and spruce up an existing blind. Many of them are in pretty decent shape already and have been there for years and all of the critters are already used to them. Pop something new on a tank a week before the season and you might raise the alarm of some smart critters.

Pop something new on a tank a week before the season and you might raise the alarm of some smart critters. I agree with you that most of the tanks do already have make shift blinds on them. I have scouted around 80 tanks so far and have cameras on 6 that are pretty well hidden. These do not have any blinds built around them, nor have I got pics of people. Although they have tree stands on them now. My kids are pretty good at staying still but would hate to get pinned because of some movement. They will only be up there on the weekends so I just want to have a plan for them to enjoy this as much as i will.
Schmitty Report post Posted July 3, 2008 If you've got any pics of a sasquatch sized man scouting those tanks, I'm sorry! I've got the same tag as you've got and have scouted out 30-40 of them in the past few weekends, so while I didn't notice any cameras (I wasn't exactly looking up), I'm sorry if my ugly mug appears on your memory cards. good luck! Schmitty That's funny. The tanks that the camera's are on are pretty tough to find, They are not on any maps that I have seen. They are ones that we have stumbled across over the last 15 years. Are group averages 5 elk tags a year (archery, rifle, muzzleloader) 7 this year. So we have covered a lot of ground up there over the years. Last weekend I came across 5 treestands already set over water and 1 camera. I usually throw my glasses up to check for cameras before i walk in all the way to the tank. I have been scouting up and down equally but have seen most of the bulls down low. Just wondering if you are seeing the same things. Me and a buddy are going to try to fly the unit to do a little scouting in August. Maybe we can split the cost of gas on a scouting trip or two. I am located in East Mesa. Good luck
bowsniper Report post Posted July 7, 2008 I had the same questions last Spring. I decided that a 60"x60" foot print was too small to shoot a bow a have a second person in the blind. I went with a Ameristep big house with a 72" x 72" foot print and that worked well for two people archery hunting. Mark
azhunter23 Report post Posted July 7, 2008 I broke down and got a Double Bull Dark Horse. Never hunted from the ground. any tips would be helpful.
Coach Report post Posted July 7, 2008 Hmmm - that's a pricey blind. I think you need to take me in to each of those water holes so I can help you determine which one might be too risky to leave such an investment sitting unattended. JK - Enjoy that hunt and post pix of that huge bull (or sasquatch) that you arrow!
Huntn coues Report post Posted July 7, 2008 Start out by brushing it in if possible also if you can find some shade under a tree(if possible) that will help with the heat. I have sat mine without brushing it in and have seen plenty of game but if I can I will. Make sure when you set it up that you place it playing the dominant wind although sitting a pop up helps contain your scent a bit. Also I will leave my shooting window open to where I am banking on the animal to come in all the other windows I leave closed or just cracked to peek thru. If you open more than one window you will have alot more light coming in which the animal can see your movement rather easily. Wear dark clothes on your upper body and head as well , this also makes it near to impossible to detect movement as well. If its hot bring your ice chest and shorts with you which is another benefeit to sitting a pop up. If you are like me I sit both the tree stand and pop up but I have a very hard time sitting still in my tree stand so I prefer me pop up when possible. Now I usually will set up my pop up a few days before the opener (if I fill comfortable) leaving it for them to get use to it. But I have on several occasions just thru it up jumped in and hunted. I have taken turkey's and other critters that way. The only animal that seems to peg me in a pop up is the coyote. I shot two over the turkey season from my pop up but both of them put on the brakes at thirty or so yards and looked directly at it Oh and another thing is to make sure you rake out the area before you set it up which helps reduce the noise when you move around. Also use your stakes they provide to secure it to the ground cuz when a big ole gust of wind comes you will play heck trying to keep it from blowing to the next county
