Hiker Report post Posted June 26, 2008 My son drew a Unit 17 Youth deer tag. We applied for Burro Mountains for our first choice but drew this tag as 2nd choice. This is our families' first NM tag. We plan on hunting from 11/27 thru 11/30. He is stoked! I really appreciate any help? If I can ever assist you with Colorado or Wyoming info please let me know, I usually hunt there every year. Hooked_on_Coues Report post Posted June 27, 2008 That is a good hunt. There are a few nice coues deer in there but they are all the way at the top in the thick stuff. Look at the Apache Kid wilderness area. Beautiful spot and you can hike it in a day. Go all the way to the south end and hike in on the knife-edge (you will see what I mean). You can glass for miles from there. If that doesn't work out, hunt the area north of there where the foothills transition from PJ to ponderosa. The mulies tend to hang lower than you might think. Good luck to your boy, it is a rugged but nice area.

TAM Report post Posted June 29, 2008 I elk hunted there a few years ago and was surprised at how few deer we saw! I think I saw like 4 deer in nine days. We were hunting the north and west side of the San Mateo's. I've heard that the southern end of the range and the eastern side of the range have more deer numbers. Good luck!
