narrox Report post Posted June 26, 2008 I just started to use a falling block rifle and love it. I am curious if anyone likes to use them in the field. thanks
Red Rabbit Report post Posted June 26, 2008 A youth hunter, who was entered in the coues contest a few years ago, took his coues with a classy Ruger #1 RSI.
narrox Report post Posted June 26, 2008 I like the size and weight of the little low wall, but I am not sure that I could go without the security of a quick follow up shot. As the case with most hunters I do everything I can to get the job done with a single well placed, and well executed shot, but I wonder how it would feel to go "without a net" up one the high wire. azhuntnut Report post Posted June 26, 2008 For the last three years I have been carrying an NEF .223,.243. It is very light and I don't mind dropping it or getting it scratched up due to the cost. With some tweeking and time I have been able to get this little sucker to shoot very well. You can even get one with a little smaller stock for JR's. I also just recently picked up a TC contender chambered in .243 rifle and 7mm-08 in the pistol configeration. I am having a muzzlebreak added to the 7mm-08 to make it the legal length for a rifle and will carry it around for a while and see how it does. David Here is a pic of a coyote I popped last year with the NEF .243.

Red Rabbit Report post Posted June 26, 2008 David, The muzzle brake will need to be permanently attached (eg welded) to increase the length, not just threaded on the 7-08 barrel, to get the 16" rifle min.

Doug, Thats what I was planning. I hope to get it done soon so I can use it in the fall. I will post some pictures when I finish it. I do not put in for ham hunts. I love to chase them with my bow in January when the deer are rutting at the same time. David
singleshot Report post Posted June 27, 2008 Note my handle. I love my Ruger #1's. I wish I could get a few from the old days that came with AAA fancy walnut and such, but my day will come. I love the balance and the look of my #1's, they feel great and shoot good. If your a reloader you can really serve up the soup in that indestructable falling block. I also have a couple of the NEF's. In my opinion the best value for the dollar in the market. For $450.00 you can get a good rifle and a nice leupold scope with mounts and still have enough coin for a box of shells. My next #1 is going to be in 45-70, gotta love it. Hooked_on_Coues Report post Posted June 27, 2008 I really like the singles but they seem to either shoot well or not at all. Fore-end pressure on my #1 was critical. Have a couple Brownings, '85 and a '78, and love em. The 45-70 kicks like a rented mule. Loads up to a couple hundred fps below a .458. The '78 is just to pretty to carry in Arizona. I fall down alot....
narrox Report post Posted June 27, 2008 I was at Murhy's (Tucson) last week and I could not help but look over a couple of Ruger No. 1s on the rack: .300 Win and a .375 H&H. I have a bull tag for the fall and either one would be big time elk medicine. Now I just have to quit buying gas and start saving for steel!
Bird Dog Report post Posted June 27, 2008 I have a .338 mag, .300 win mag, .22-250, and had a .270 and 6mm untill earlier this year. All of which with a bit of help on the triggers shot well and then with the hicks accurizer have proven to shoot very will... or at least under 1" at 100 yrds. One thing I love about ruger no.1's is the volocity increase over standard rifles because of the full barrel length. For example my .270 had a 26" barrel and a good charge of H4831 shot a nosler balistic tip 150gr. at 2950+ fps. I shot a 150gr speer at 57.5 gr H4831 at just shy of 3000 fps. The .338 win is death on elk at any range I have used. My wife shot a cow at 360 yrds with a 200 gr. nosler at about 3050 fps on a facing shot. The elks neck whipped back so hard that the elk broke its pelvis and hip hitting the ground so hard. Awesom elk round!
Bird Dog Report post Posted June 27, 2008 I know of a young man here in Flag. that bought a 300 win last fall. has a muzzle break on it and a accurizer. He bought a 300 ultra and doesn't need this rifle. It is a ruger no. 1 b in stailess. If your interested let me know and I can put you in contact with him. Just thought I would put it out there. Thanks for that, but I am set up for this year. I will be packing a M77 in .338. You know the mantra "I spent all of my money on wine, women, and guns the rest I just wasted! dcrjr Report post Posted June 28, 2008 I've got a Ruger #1 in 270 Weatherby Mag. It was a RMEF auction item I purchased on a whim ten years ago. It's still in the hard case that accompanied it and has never been fired. I supposed I was intrigued by the caliber until I got to looking at the price of Weatherby ammo.
