azhuntnut Report post Posted June 25, 2008 I had the opportunity to learn little bit about these new binos that should be hitting the stores soon. I was told by a Nikon source that the new EDG binos are 6% brighter than the Swaro EL's. Now I haven't had a chance to look through them yet since Nikon has only sent out ten pairs to different outdoor writers to do there own testing and reviews. I hope to get a pair as soon as they become available. If you are thinking about buying a new pair of binos soon, you might want to wait and take a look at these. firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted June 25, 2008 Yeah, Im not sure anything besides Lieca Duovids and Ultravids will come close to matching/passing the EL's. theyre pretty good! Plus, the only time I have looked through EL's, it was to watch a 100"buck fall!

azhuntnut Report post Posted June 25, 2008 When Nikon proves that they are brighter and the clarity is better than the EL's, the Swaro guys are still going to say that the EL's are better. Some guys like Fords, and others like Chevys. Most of the time it comes down to ego. I know most guys would spend a couple hundred dollors more for Swaros over another product that might be better just to say they have a pair. I own a Swaro ats 80 and think it is great, but I picked up a smaller Nikon ED glass spotter last year and never take my Swaro out anymore. I almost bought the EL's last year, but liked the Nikon LX L's better, so I bought those instead. I guess we will have to see what the outdoor writers and professional birders have to say about the new Nikons. David
COOSEFAN Report post Posted June 25, 2008 I really wasn't trying to bag on Nikon....just givin' Davey a hard time Nikons are great for the money and are best in their class as far as I'm concerned....BUT, on that note, they are not in the same class as Swarovski or Leica and that isn't based on price! (can't beleive I just said the "L" word in the same sentence as Swarovski ) The construction, quality of glass and durability sets Swaro's apart from the rest.....you get what you pay for when it comes to optics!!! And it is a fact that there is a sense of pride in ownership, you gotta be proud of what you have after spendin' that kind of cash! Those new Nikons at least look better than any other Nikon binos I've seen, I would bet they are good........just not the best

If so, I had a client who had a prototype of one a couple years ago and it was awesome, and tiny! That thing is for sure the best in its class!!
azryan Report post Posted June 26, 2008 Its fun to see all the commotion about new binos coming out. When Vortex came out with there stuff, there was a lot of hype, but when I finally got a chance to look through some pairs I laughed and was dissapointed, people talked them up way too much . I am getting the same vibe for the new Nikons , I doubt they are going to be brighter more or less 6% brighter..its just a marketing scheme because when people hear that, its going to strike the curiosity of that person to look through a pair. I predict that the new Nikons are going to come in with a bang but in the end will not sell as much as they expect them too. I am not putting Nikon down but I just dont think they will have a product better then, like Jim said Swarovski or Leicas. They might be close, but not better IMO. Swarovski's will always hold a dear spot in my eyes and heart nothing or no one will change that
mattobertin Report post Posted June 26, 2008 From my experience the only people that talk bad about the Swarovski's are the one's that can't afford them or spend twice the time & $$$$$ trying to experiment with other brands only to find there is no replacement for quality. I have owned plenty of Nikon scopes and binos and they are a great product BUT, they don't even come close to Swaro's. My second arguement is that Swarovski's have always been good and Nikon and other brands are always trying to catch up with Swarovski (the benchmark of quality) it just never happens and all of the hype is layed to rest and later laughed at! Now all of this aside, I hope Nikon does make something comparable at a lower price so all of my hunting bro's will spot as much game as I do instead of trying to borrow my Swaro's! azhuntnut Report post Posted June 26, 2008 Before you start the "they can't afford it deal", thats not true by any means. I agree that Swaro has been the benchmark for a long time, but there is a new bully on the block. I heard that Jimmy loves those Vortex binos. Yes Casey, it is the 13-30x50ED spotting scope. I know I am not supposed to say this out loud, but I would rather carry it instead of my Swaro ATS80. OK, I have my flame retardant suit on now. firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted June 26, 2008 I dont blame you at all! That Nikon is probably 95% of the Swarovski, at a fraction of the price, and one one hundredth of the weight of the Swaro! I was EXTREMLY impressed by it when I looked through it! On a side note, the gentleman at the birdforum notes the Zeiss FL being excellant glass and they are. I have had a few clients with them and I have been extremly impressed by them both times, but they feel some what "cheap" to me, all thorugh they are FAR from that!
