For halibut we went out of Ninilchik twice on J&J Smart Charters http://www.smartcharters.com/ they have lodging that very affordable and nice to stay in. No palm trees yet, but early catches of both dorado & yellowfin tuna by local winter trollers have scientists and the fishing industry simultaneously energized and mystified. Local Tlingit commercial fishing legend, Stuart Dewitt, is optimistic, “My family & ancestors have eaten halibut and salmon from these waters for millennia. Millennia… That’s a long butt time to only have two types of fish in the freezer!!” Harry Reitze of Haines Packing states, “These are the first ever caught this far north but I’ve converted my whole processing facility this winter for the upcoming summer catch of mahi mahi and yellowfin. We always like to stay well ahead of the competition.
