Huntn coues Report post Posted June 21, 2008 I was reading an article in the Arizona wildlife magazine last night about Mountain lions and in the article it say's (fact) that they can jump 15' in the air and cross a distance of 45' in one leap Now when I read this I was throwing back a couple cold ones with some friends and they laughed at the article. So after some heavy debating I grabbed my tape and measured the height of my garage and came up with 16' give or take a few inches. So after some more pondering I started to think can a mountain lion actually jump that high and far to where it could clear my garage What do you kitty experts think? russd Report post Posted June 21, 2008 well when i shot at one last year that sucker jumped at least 10 feet. all four legs flopping around, but it was wayyy up there. and that is from the flat ground.
Snapshot Report post Posted June 21, 2008 I have read some opinions on that over the years and have heard 12' and 30' and what have you. I remember one of those old Marty Stouffer movies that showed a Mt. Lion jumping across a gorge or something, I don't remember how far but I am guessing 30' or better, it was the most graceful looking leap I had ever seen, it almost looked liked it was soaring. As far as exact distances I have no idea, but 15' and 45 ' may be possible for a lean, strong, cougar?

firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted June 21, 2008 Terry, you should see them when they stop in my back yard to eat a bird they have just caught and are trying to get away fro my dogs! Then they REALLY make the 6'6 jump over my wall look easy! Felines are amazing atheletes for sure!

mattys281 Report post Posted June 23, 2008 I got this trail cam pic about 4 days ago. Lookin at the hind legs on this cat, 15 feet doesn't seem like to much of a stretch to me.
Rembrant Report post Posted June 23, 2008 Yep, a cat is pretty much a cat. Maybe the african lions and other giant cats lose a bit of athleticism with their bulk, but a cougar is lean. I say we consider a house cat leaping 7' and give the mountain lion credit for being able to do the same thing proportionally, and put the burden on the nay-sayers to prove otherwise. coueshunter84 Report post Posted June 23, 2008 I had one come out of a salt ceder at my feet. It covered 61 yards ( by range finder) in 3 bounds, and was back into the thick stuff before I was able to get my bow up. And thats with the arrow on the string and the release already hooked. From where it came out to the first spot it landed was 17 yards, from there to the second spot it landed was 19 yards, and the last 22 yards was the last leap. We measured from where it took off to where it landed, so there is some ground time between leaps. But was incredible to see. Makes you wonder how the Desert Museum keeps theirs in the pen. matthewp45 Report post Posted June 24, 2008 That isn't a mountain lion that throws the football over the mountain, it is a liger. Probably the coolest animal ever!
