COOSEFAN Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Hey guys, I'm getting excited about a rifle I have being built right now and i'm deciding on whether or not to have it Cera-Koted. I know the rifle will have different colors and finishes on all it's components so I was thinking of having it all cera-koted....except for the stock. The stock is already camo'ed from McMillan but thought it would look cool with a solid matching color on all the other components....barrel, action, scope etc. I have no knowledge about it other than what I've read on a website. Besides the cosmetic value of it, is it as durable as they say? I'm afraid of it chipping or flaking off leaving my baby cheap looking.....is that a valid concern? Also, if they apply it on my scope as well is there reason to worry about the lenses getting messed up? Lastly, is there any places you reccomend doing it.....I've only looked at LTM Refinishing so far. Thanks in advance, JIM>
Red Rabbit Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Lots of satified users and many think it is the best coating out there. Doug Burche @ Ultracoatings (formerly Fit4Duty) did my 6.5WSM. No chipping or peeling. May as well him ultra bore coat the barrel also. Do a search for cerakote on 24hourcampfire.com http://www.ultracoatingsinc.com/services.html

GameHauler Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Hey Jim, I am going to do the Girls model seven since some of the blueing came of when I striped the camo paint. But it won't fit in my oven. Thanks for the source to have it done Doug. Anyway Jim the instructions say you can not do the scope. Maybe because you have to bake it at 300 degrees. Red Rabbit Report post Posted June 17, 2008 Check out the nice rig 257 WidowMaker that Kampfeld did for dvdegeorge. The different coloring of the fluting, shroud and knob sets it off. This should give you some ideas. (scroll about halfway down the page) http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/u.../page/1/fpart/

COOSEFAN Report post Posted June 18, 2008 Heck yeah, that's awesome! That is very close to the same color I want and I love the accents too. I've heard the cera-kote has two different applications, one is baked on and the other is sprayed on which cures by air drying....thats how they do the scopes I believe. The stock I have being made is supposed to be done any day now. I found this picture below on a website, loved the colors in the stock, and McMillan remembered exactly which gun it was and still had the recipe for the colors! So mine should look the same but I got the Lazzeroni Thumbhole instead of this one which I think is the A-5. I was thinking of matching the tan color in the stock for the cera-kote, or maybe the darker brownish and doing that solid color cera-kote on all the other parts! Might have to do the accents also, that looked awesome! After all that I'll have to learn how to shoot the beast! Thanks, JIM>
