PSEHunter Report post Posted November 29, 2004 Anyone seen any rutting acitivity yet? I know it usually starts in late December but I was hoping with the colder winter so far that it might be gearing up. Also....I have hunted these ghosts for several years but have yet to take one with a bow. Any tips, tricks, ideas for the rut? I have called, rattled and stalked but not much success. I can say that I have taken a mule deer 5 of the last 7 years. I hunt 33, reddington pass area. thanks
TAM Report post Posted November 30, 2004 I was down scouting over the weekend and the deer were very active. We got a late start in the morning and still saw quite a few deer. There were some small bucks sparring and one was even chasing does, the does weren't into it though. I'd say with all this good cold and wet weather we've been having this fall, the rut should hit pretty hard by the end of December. The small bucks are sure starting to get excited. Manamal Report post Posted December 1, 2004 Things are heating up in central AZ also, saw some unit 22 bucks playing around the other day. Nothing serious but still cool to watch. PSEHunter, I'll be trying some rattling this year. Have you ever had a buck show any interest to the rattling? I think it would work best to locate bucks first, get to 100 or 150 yards and then start your sequence.
PSEHunter Report post Posted December 1, 2004 I have had little success. Had a small 3 pointer (80") come into about 100 yds last year. But he would not come any closer. I talked to Duwayne Adams (How to Hunt Coues Deer) yesterday and he said that there are a couple of calls out there that work well once they get into that range. One is made by Modern Call Products. Check this link....its only $10.45 https://secure.christianwebhost.com/modernc...3037657ce68f471

Redman Report post Posted December 3, 2004 Hey PSEHunter, A word of advice, make sure you take the call out of your mouth BEFORE you draw back your bow. I called on in last year Jan to about 10 feet and when I let the string go, my call was in my mouth and hit the string. Redman
PSEHunter Report post Posted December 3, 2004 Thanks Redman, I have read one of your previous posts where you talked about that before. Did you break any teeth on that shot? OUCH! Anyways thanks for the tip! Are you usually succesful caling them in? Any pointers?
hookedoncoues Report post Posted December 11, 2004 My son had the 32 junior hunt the end of last month. We hunted until the 5th of Dec. and I never seen any sign of the rut. I know that is alittle early but my friend's son had a mule deer tag in 24a and he said the the coues that he seen were sparing quite a bit. I was hoping that maybe that would be the case farther south. It was not. Taking my 12 year old son hunting was an experience. I have alot to learn as a guide of a 12 year old boy. (Hee,Hee.) bcoover Report post Posted December 14, 2004 I was up at my spot yesterday and I would say the deer are right in the heart of the rut. I don't know about the rest of Arizona but I am going to have a great hunt.
More D Report post Posted December 15, 2004 What part of AZ are you refering to?
rabidApache Report post Posted December 24, 2004 As of today, I personnelly counted 4 different coues bucks chasing a doe for over a hour. I was scout'n the area between San Carlos Lake(Coolidge Dam) and Winkelman AZ, an area known as Unit D West. Plenty of bucks to be looked over, myself and a buddy counted a total of 11 whitetail bucks all day today.I can definetly say that the rut is or has begun in central AZ. I'm located near Globe, San Carlos Rez. Of the 11 bucks spotted today, two where well over the 100 inch mark, easy. Good hunt'n
BASS Report post Posted December 28, 2004 I can safely say that the rut is in full swing in Unit 22, and at least 32 also. As I was in both of those units this past weekend, and the action was intense! My buddy, and I are heading out to 22 this weekend for some late Decmeber, early January hunting. I'm thinking of packing my video camera to see if I can catch some nice footage.
Dodger2 Report post Posted January 4, 2005 PSEHunter, I was in 33 on Dec. 30 and watched a good buck mount a doe. I guess you could say the rut is definitely on in 33.
