jeepers creepers Report post Posted June 12, 2008 Has anyone done any varmit hunting at San Carlos reservation? Is it worth the drive and a weekend stay? I've never been there, but I've heard its a decent weekend trip.
azhuntnut Report post Posted June 12, 2008 I went hunting for lion on the Carlos the last couple years. Usually during Febuary or March after the snow has melted. There are a ton of coyotes out on the flats right before you make the turn up the hill to the rim. If you drive out the dirt road right at the turn up the hill early in the morning, you can catch the coyotes cutting across the road. They like to chase the antelope and calfs around this time. I have seen a fair amount of fox up on top in the forest areas and down on the flats. If you are going to hunt lion at the same time, you have to have a seperate tag for that, and one for varmint hunting, along with the daily use permit. It can add up fast if you spend four or five days hunting. I have seen more varmints just driving around then calling. If you are going to call in the forest, make sure you have a buddy with you to watch out for the bears. They will come in looking for some free food. San Carlos used to be a great hunting spot. years ago it had yotes everywhere. it seemed like once you got in the truck from one spot to the next, you'd always see them running around. Down in the flats by ash creek ranch was great. It seemed like two years ago they all vanished. Maybe things changed in the last year or so. Great place though. I strongly urge you to check it out.
