Josh says.........................

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! I'm not the bonafide expert here but I have seen LOTS of coues racks over the past 20 years of really looking at them closely. So far I say the pictures suck and that we need better ones. No comment as of right now. You're to funny Monty!!

I've never seen a mule deer with such a small skull cap...

I'm with CRB on this one. It's hard to tell, but it looks like the skull cap is about the same size as the other Coues skull in the picture. A mule deer skull would be significantly larger. (Josh is right, better pics would help) I think it's probably the real deal, but who really knows for sure. We could speculate for ever on it and all it would be is just that, speculation. As far as where it came from, I don't put much stock into that having anything to do with the size. Monster deer can pop up anywhere. There is a county here in Nevada that traditionally doesn't produce big mule deer. Matter of fact it's only produced 1 buck that was ever submitted and accepted into the book. That buck however scored in the 320's (I don't remember the exact score) and is number 4 in the world. ;)

Hmmmm..... If that's a coues then it's worth allot more than 6 g's. If that's a coues then u need it officially scored and put in the books under youre family's name. If that's a coues then I wouldn't sell it. If that's a coues then Holly crap!!!! If that's a coues then u need DNA testing to proove it. ;) I'm not saying it's impossible.. But u need proof.

If someone finds a 480 elk head there is no guessing the species. see where i'm going?

Untill you do these things it's nothin more than a Big Muley..... ;)

I believe that Arizonas' number 2 typical was taken in 1995 a 143in. killed by Larry Johnson and now owned by Allen Ellsworth. It was Taken in Navajo county. Like I said, it's possible.

Heres my first buck, Without those elephant ears you'd bet it was a B&C coues rack wouldn't you ;) Once again if you trully think it's coues you'll need a DNA test  post-2337-1212732363_thumb.jpgpost-2337-1212732398_thumb.jpg

Just wanted to see what other coues hunters thought about the rack. I am not one to post pic but i do get alot of them sent to me throughout the day so I do apologize if I had some wrong info or for posting the pics.

There is no way that rack came from a mule deer or even one of the black-tailed deer. I would bet my next elk tag that it's a whopper of a Coues deer. It could be from one of the larger northern whitetail subspecies, but I think not. It has just too many characteristics that say desert whitetail to me.

Incidentally, to those who say there's no way the rack of a North American elk can be confused with another species, there are several closely related deer species in Asia that have similar antlers and it would take a knowledgeable person to tell their antlers apart.

As for types (subspecies) of elk, there are many on this planet. An elk (Asian wapiti or maral) I shot in Mongolia years ago had 6x6 antlers and a body that looked exactly like those I've killed in Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado.

If you want a 480 elk, I suggest you hunt in China's Tian Shan. I've not been there, but that mountain range is where the world's largest elk are found.

I disagree, The biggest wild elk on the planet live in arizona ;) I believe it's called the Moggollon Rim and the White mountain range. USA!!! USA!!! USA!!!

Ever see the Shipsey Bull?

And I'm 99.9% sure if someone finds an elk head here in AZ They'll know what the heck it is. I guess you could have allota fun thinkin it could be a Mammoth or somethin ;)  :P

However,I have seen many and own some deer sheds and heads you could have a hard time guessin. Concerning Mule, whitetail, blacktail and coues. Of course there are many subspecies therein. But in a nutshell those big 4 standout to me. Here lies this topic............ All spec without a DNA test my friends.

Used to be quite a few Coues within a few miles of Heber, I don't doubt it was a Coues, but I don't know, but man when I got those emailed to me, my heart stopped.
