COOSEFAN Report post Posted May 27, 2008 what do you mean you can't kill em? i've never seen a snake a 12 guage wouldn't decapitate. i hate rattle snakes. be with somebody that gets bit by one and you'll have the same attitude. SilentButDeadly Report post Posted May 28, 2008 I had a snake 3 inches from my boot for about 15 minutes while I sat on a seat-sized rock glassing last fall; never knew he was there till I picked up my tripod and the rock by my foot moved (it was the rock). I let um live, after seriously contemplating beating it to death with my tripod -- my reason for not killing it was that it had left my soft pink ankle alone and I should show the same courtesy. Maybe he/she'll breed and those 'do not strike giant exposed ankle' genes will get passed on... Only ever seen one twin-spot, caught it when I was 14 in the Chiricahuas, about the size of an earthworm (just a hatchling)... Coosefan -- yikes! If they are aggressive for no reason they will more than likely die--if the go the other way or just sit there looking at me they live--just me--don't expect anyone else to understand. Make nice belts though Stepped on 4 to date and had many other close encounters, my dog also. Been very lucky so far, no conecting strikes. A high school friend I had allmost lost his arm to one while hikeing. He was 12 when it happened. Just a little timber rattler- yet as dangerous as a high speed auto crash There is allways a snake bite kit in my pack. And snake gun! To date one rattler i encountered was non-aggressive, I let that one go. Probly will let more go in the future.I have enough snake hides for one person. Also gonna buy snake chaps. tjhunt2 Report post Posted May 31, 2008 I've stepped beside them, over them, and even had one strike my boot but have escaped a bite somehow. I use to kill everyone I saw but have not killed one in over 10 or so years. I finally realized they are here for a reason and they are neat to look at. First one was one I stepped on one in a wash while quail hunting. After hearing it and realizing it was him or me, I used the 12 Gauge to cut him down. Whilst mid-air and about three feet high jumping backwards. . . he met the business end of my 870, he was about 5 1/2 feet long, later that day I saw two even bigger rattlers fighting each other in a pit it was the coolest thing I ever saw! I watched for about 2.6 seconds and then mowed them down as fast as I could pump that old 12 guage! Ammo well spent! I don't quail hunt around there anymore. My brother in law got bit by one and it nearly killed him, poison ruined his heart and lungs and now he really struggles, wearing a medicine pump to live. He isn't even 40 yet! Kill them all. I was very fortunate when I was bitten and although it was life threatening I was treated fast and that spared any long term injury for me. I ran into a medium sized Mohave rattler last night and thought of this topic. It was one of the most aggressive ones I've seen, it actually was coming at me and I never provoked it. The dang thing kept flipping over 'cause he was so wound up, tense and ready to take me out! firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted June 5, 2008 Somehow, I have been extremly lucky and have only come across one while out there (knock on wood)... This thing coiled up and was ready to whoop my butt when I was about 5 feet from him. I sat there looking at this 3-3.5" rattler for about 15 seconds trying to decide if I should let him go and take pictures of him, or introduce him to a 155 gr. hollow point from the Xd-40...
