Illegal to Kill Rattlesnake?

Recommended Posts

So today at the river there were some shots fires. MCSO was dispatched out to the area to investigate why there was shooting in an area closed to shooting/hunting. A K9 was dispatched out when the shooters refused to come out of the brush when confronted by Sheriffs Deputies. Anyways, long story short, AZGFD was called out and arrested the two guys for 1) killing a rattlesnake and 2)discharge of a firearm near an inhabited building. It was mentioned, that many snakes are killed every year by many people, and was promptly followed up with "well, they are participating in illegal activity in which they will be arrested for if caught." When the heck did this happen? Who knew that we were all breaking the law each dove season.

They probably did not have hunting licenses with them and were cited for killing it with put a license, hunting in an area that is closed to hunting and shooting within a quarter mile of an occupied building without the permission of the occupants. (The first two are considered poaching.)

Bass,

What time was this at? Just curious, because I drove threw the river at about 7:00 (ish pm) and there were about 7 MCSO and one Game and Fish officer....I was wondering what the heck was going on.

That's what was going on. The river opened up this weekend so there was/are a lot of MCSO staff out there making sure everything went smoothly. As soon as a report of shots fired in the area came out everyone who had been relaxing or patroling the parking lots took off out to the scene. Just another fun day trying to keep the drunks off the road. ;)

Not sure, but from the looks for the individuals standing on the side of the road, I really doubt they had their hunting licence with them (especially the girl in the bikini ;) ). They were within 1/4 mile of a building. Also, they had no business shooting down there, there were people everywhere. A good rock would have taken care of that snake with out going to jail.

If you need to identify any reptile or amphibian in AZ just go to http://www.reptilesofaz.com/ . It has great color photos of every snake, lizard, turtle aand frog in the state and where they live.

There are four species of rattlesnake that you can't kill in Arizona. The Ridgenosed, Twin Spotted, Rock, and Massasauga. All of them life in the far south east corner of the state.

Massasauga is the coolest of the bunch. i have seen a couple near Safford--i have gotten to the point where i just don't kill every snake i see--

what do you mean you can't kill em? i've never seen a snake a 12 guage wouldn't decapitate. i hate rattle snakes. be with somebody that gets bit by one and you'll have the same attitude. Lark.
