Red Rabbit Report post Posted May 25, 2008 Where Are You Going to be Opening Morning? Sitting looking west on the first sunlit eastern slopes following the sun-line downward? Glassing the southern slopes for feeding bucks? Looking at a saddle waiting for the deer to move through? Peering into the bedding areas on the north slopes? On a knob looking onto the flats below? Looking down on a water hole? Still in the sleeping bag? What makes you choose your position for opening morning?

coueschaser3 Report post Posted May 25, 2008 archery deer/bear- In the dark, 5 miles from any road, absorbing the cool temperatures and fearing the heat and bugs to come. Kicked back against a juniper on the edge of a canyon waiting for light to glass, so i can catch the movement of the big velvety coues rack or the contrasting hide of a bear in the manzanita. Rifle deer- Same canyon, cold, waiting for the sun to give me light and warmth. Waiting for the 100+ rack i glassed up the last evening of archery deer (hopefully), yet hard horned now. Probably watching a fat cinnamon bear casually feed now that the season is closed and i couldnt find him earlier. Rifle bull- Same canyon yet again. Freezing, trying to stay off the snow soaking through my cloths. Praying the bull i had glassed all year and watched though the rut is bedding in the same drainage. Fatasizing about his rack and thinking about being warm, but enjoying that there are no bugs biting and buzzing around. Waiting for light to reveal his existance. Snapshot Report post Posted May 25, 2008 If the draw is good enough to provide me with a deer tag, then it would be the first three items on your list, watching slopes and saddles, if I get drawn for my New Mexico Archery Elk then I will start off with sitting water hole which is my least favorite way to hunt. liv4coues Report post Posted May 26, 2008 If I'm fortunate enough to draw another tag this year, I'll be atop a ridge in Southern Arizona, with my dad, brother, and one Jimmer Negamenee, waiting for the sunlight to hit the eastern slopes. The application is going in the mail tomorrow!
