True, a few more coues may go to the wolves instead of hunters, but native animal population and biodiversity is important for a healthy habitat, as is the lack of exotic animal population (cows). We hunters need to be concerned for the long term health of the coues habitat, not just the number of coues tags we'll get next year. About the only thing I can agree with you on is having priority on the health of the resource (habitat). I don't see how reintroducing grizzlies and wolves would increase diversity. I n my opinion it would not be fair to the animals to try and force them to live in a habitat that will not support them. There is simply not enough space for a healthy population of wolves to live the way that god (not people) intended them to. Tonto Report post Posted November 19, 2004 We've already got the wolves here. What does a line on a map mean to a wolf? For that matter a barbed wire fence? Them wolves cross the National border when they want to and they dang sure will leave the Blue when they want to also. When we get them wolves and bears officially reintroduced, I guarantee there will be more access restrictions all over the State, firearms and bows will be collecting dust and hunting (of anykind) will be phased out. I want to be able to hunt for a lot longer, not tell stories about how good it was way back when people were allowed to hunt on public lands. wetmule Report post Posted November 19, 2004 You people that want wolves, grizzlies, Condors, T-Rex's and Dodo's reintroduced to AZ are INSANE. They put about 60 wolves back in Jellystone in 96 ? Now there are probably close to 800 + running around. There are no more moose in Jellystone, there are no deer, they are destroying the bighorn sheep and antelope herds and have decimated the famous elk herd and probably cut it in half in a short amount of time. They are in Montana, Idaho, Wyo destroying cattle and everything else in there wake. The people up there hate them and the Govt. for putting them back there. Arizona Griz Report post Posted November 20, 2004 Obviously I am the minority here. I am a wolf lover and even had one for a pet for a few years. I am not up on the statistics as to how many game animals the wolves in Arizona take that normally would be taken by hunters. Just remember that hunting is a privledge used to control the population of a partcular game species when it meets or exceeds what its habitat can support. I just wonder how many elk or deer tags have been reduced in Units 1 and 27 because of wolves. And correct me if I am wrong, if a wolf takes any ranchers livestock isn't the rancher compensated for the loss. I do hunt and have done so in Arizona for 35 years. I just think we can live together with the wolves and possibly someday the Grizzly bears. I wonder if the majority opinion here would feel the same if somehow the Jaguar's population and range extended further north as it used to be. Kind of makes you wonder. And to the remark about the California Condor. That is pretty sad that someone wouldn't be willing to bring an animal back from near exinction. If that was the majority attitude of the public we would not have a huntable population of game animals such as Turkeys, Elk, Antelope and Bison. I am sure most of you realize because of our ignorance we have already lost the following game animals in North America, Labrador Duck, Heath Hen and Passenger Pidgeon. wetmule Report post Posted November 20, 2004 Fortunately, the transplanted wolves have'nt taken hold here in AZ like they have in WYO. It is an incredible success story for that species up there, but to the detriment of all other species. Go to Wyo or Mont. and talk to the locals - pretty soon there won't be anything in yellowstone and that part of the country cept bison and wolves. It is going to happen, heck it's happening right now. Can't imagine yellowstone and NW Wyo.without elk, moose, sheep, deer, antelope etc. but that's the way it's headed. It's an incredible place to take a family vacation but I won't go just to see buffalo, geysers and big dogs. Yes we pay OUR tax dollars to reimburse ranchers for the destruction of their herds by the feds pet projects. I've talked to ranchers, why don't you ask them about getting reimbursed for wolf predation and all the paperwork and BS they have to go through. I'm not all that opposed to Grizz back in AZ, I just don't think they would do well, they need lots and lots of space, more than we have here. As far as Condors go, I'm fine with them too. I just don't want to see our rights as sportsmen and women disappear because of some stinkin bird that never lived here in AZ anyway. I was invited and participarted in a G & F Condor study focus group last year. How about the possibility of never hunting the Kaibab or 12-B or the strip or even 9 and unit 10 again because we would be interfering with the natural behavior of the Condors and they would take precedent. How about switching to un-leaded bullets in those areas. How about after you shoot a coyote you take your shovel and bury it six feet down so the Condors can't get to it and possibly ingest the lead. These are just a few of the things that were proposed at this meeting. Yeah I'm all for locking up all our publics lands so we can have a few condors and a few spotted owls and black footed ferrets. Lock it all up, heck I don't care, the way things are going we will only see hunting as we know it for maybe another generation if we are lucky! Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
