snake boots or gaiters

Recommended Posts

I am in the market for some snake protection for summer scouting and shed hunting. What are you guys using? I usually am out in the hills alone and I have had one too many snake encounters. I like the idea of boots but I know they are going to be hot and heavy in the summer. Gaiters on the other hand do not offer as much protection but would be more comfortable, I think. any thoughts?

I use the gaiters. I use them when i am prospecting with my detector because i have head phones on. I also use them when hunting the hot times of the year. I like them better than the boots because i can take them off when resting and let my leggs dry out a bit. If you get the gaiters make sure you get the ones with the part that covers the top of your foot as well. Most snake bites they say go from the knee down the top of the foot..

The ones I use are similar to catchers shinguards but go all the way around your leg and cover the top of your foot-they double for protection from stingrays when fishing sandy flats in the ocean. I have used boots also and find that the snake guards are not as hot as the boots and only take a few seconds to put on or take off.

Jack,

Is the brand of gaiter you are using specificly for stingrays and snakes.... or did you just try it out and found that is works in that application as well?? I am only asking cuz I would have never thought of that and dislike stingrays as much as snakes!

I also have used the type of snake gaiter that covers the top of the foot. Never have been struck at with them on but you do "feel" safer from snakes.... I don't think I would buy or wear the boots because of how high they come up your leg.... I would bet money that they will screw with your calf muscle, big time.... ;)

The gaiters are great on Speed Goat hunts when the grasses are high like they will be this year.... These are two of the only pics that I have of the snake gaiters I have used.

My snake guards look just like the ones in your picture. I have a friend who started using them in the flats in Texas while fishing for redfish, and he put me on to the idea-they work- have been hit by stingrays with no penetration. The water doesn't hurt them-just hang them up and air dry. My friend keeps his stored on his boat in Texas.

I use the gaiters. I only wish I could wear them with shorts. It gets a little hot out there in the summer time. Last year I came accross about 10 snakes. I won't go out without them in the summer time.

Thanks guys

I guess my main concern with the gaiters is the toe area. It seems like that area would not be covered by the gaiters, and in most cases the snake would be closest to that part of your foot. I need a steel toed tennis shoe.
