.270 Report post Posted May 13, 2008 maybe the gov't can pass a law that says that volcanos can't erupt anymore. i mean they're tryin' to legislate weather, why not volcanos? and while they're at it, lets don't have anymore o' them dang earthquakes or twisters either. here are a couple article about just 2 of the dozens of active volcanos right now on earth. wonder how much "greenhouse" gas they put off? maybe we can put a big scrubber or a catalytic convertor on em. SilentButDeadly Report post Posted May 13, 2008 wonder how much "greenhouse" gas they put off? maybe we can put a big scrubber or a catalytic convertor on em. Answer: Not much - humans put out 100 times more, every year, volcanoes only go off every few years. "Volcanoes put off less than 1% of the annual CO2 emissions annually," -- Pinatubo put off 42Mt CO2 in 1991: http://www.bgs.ac.uk/programmes/landres/se...ntributions.pdf "Comparison of CO2 emissions from volcanoes vs. human activities. Scientists have calculated that volcanoes emit between about 130-230 million tonnes (145-255 million tons) of CO2 into the atmosphere every year (Gerlach, 1999, 1991). This estimate includes both subaerial and submarine volcanoes, about in equal amounts. Emissions of CO2 by human activities, including fossil fuel burning, cement production, and gas flaring, amount to about 27 billion tonnes per year (30 billion tons) [ ( Marland, et al., 2006) - The reference gives the amount of released carbon ©, rather than CO2, through 2003.]. Human activities release more than 130 times the amount of CO2 emitted by volcanoes--the equivalent of more than 8,000 additional volcanoes like Kilauea (Kilauea emits about 3.3 million tonnes/year)! (Gerlach et. al., 2002)" : http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/Hazards/What/VolGas/volgas.html It should also be noted that Volcanoes have a COOLING effect on climate due to the dust they put into the upper atmosphere -- the best example was the summer of 1816 - also called 'the year without a summer': http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer

Did I miss the pictures Indeed, I found a Coue's shed last week - it was so pathetic I didn't want to take a picture - imagine a 3 inch spike... I found some elk sheds up on the South Rim though - left um laying as they were inside NPS boundry - I've only got 1 good pic with me here at work - apparently elk like to bed on the rim - probably to take advantage of the warm air coming up outta the big ditch at night.
