Apatkelley Report post Posted May 8, 2008 My old tripod bit the dust and I'm looking for a new one. I have been looking at the bogen tripods and heads. leaning toward the 190XB or an older 3001 set of legs and not sure what head is best. I know a lot of people like the grip head but I think I might go with a pan tilt. What do you guys think? I will be using it with my Leica 10X42s and a 60mm Nikon Fieldscope T3

youngbuck Report post Posted May 8, 2008 +1 on the head. I have two of them. I have one on a bogen 3001 and one on a lighter velbon, from pictures I think it is very similar to the one Amanda has. I usually haul both rigs. One for video and one for glassin. My dad has a bum back so i haul it for him too. In the wind or standing hardly anything will beat the 3001. I use it for video mostly on long shots. When i archery hunt the bogen stays in the truck and i haul the velbon. The bogen was the first real tripod i used. The thing weighs a ton but i got used to it. Now when i pack the little one i feal like im hardly hauling anything. Im not a big fan of a grip head. It clicks every time you move it. Other heads to look at would be a Jim White and the Outdoorsmans. Ive used both, i prefer the Outdoorsmans. For the money the 700rc2 is tough to beat. If the handle is too long, just trim it down to size

Apatkelley Report post Posted May 14, 2008 Thanks for the info guys. I ordered a 190XB with the 128RC2 head. They tell me that it is the same head as the 3130. The head alone is just over 2lbs so i'm a little worried about that, but I like the large adjustment knobs and the fluid movement. I also orded an additional plate for my spotting scope. I can't wait to get it in and give it a test run. I will end up paying right at $200.00 after I get my $25.00 rebate check back from Bogen.

Your glassing is going to be a lot of fun with your new investment. Good luck scouting. TJ
Apatkelley Report post Posted May 22, 2008 Well, it's here at last and I love it. I really like the leg locks, quick release plates and the head pans/tilts better than I thought it could. I do think I will shorten the handle or even remove it. Thanks for the tips guys.
