I called game and fish with this exact scenario. (And an experienced warden, not a front office lady answered my question.)

I was told you can pursue and recover the animal if it is dead and down, but you can not take a firearm and you must leave it if it is not deceased.

So if alive you can kill it? What tag you putting on it? Last year or current?

If this deer is still alive and you find it and want to kill it and put this years  tag on it that would be perfectly legal.

Well, in my situation, (which I stayed above) i could not kill it.

However, in this situation, kill it and put the 2020 tag on.

I was trying to find out what their thoughts were. If it was dead use last year's tag. Smart to post on here that day. That's your alibi. The d bags that think you use this year's tag are the ones I was hunting for.
