COOSEFAN Report post Posted April 26, 2008 I recently found a small hidden pond out in the desert north of Phoenix and went out today to find a way to get a boat in there. We didn't have much time, but I took the ol' lady and a fishing pole and quickly found a good spot. I've never fished it so this was the first time and it was hot so I didn't expect anything. On the 3rd cast with a small Rapala crankbait I caught this decent largemouth! I'll probably have the boat on there this evening, but we have to carry the boat for about 200 yards.....and my aluminum is heavy! Should be worth it though! Outdoor Writer Report post Posted April 26, 2008 You should hotfoot it to SW or Cabela's and buy a float tube as in the pic below! It would be perfect for that fishin' hole. The water is probably warm enough where you wouldn't need waders even. -TONY
CouesWhitetail Report post Posted April 26, 2008 I agree with Tony!! Float tubes are awesome. They even make the kind now that keep you up higher out of the water in case you don't want the classic type he has in his pic. Amanda
COOSEFAN Report post Posted April 27, 2008 I'd love to get one of those tubes and it would be A LOT easier I'm sure! I would definitely want one that allows you to sit higher out of the water, this pond is deep, dark, and who knows what creatures live in it! It's even spooky crawling through tunnels in the salt cedars just to get to it! I actually just got home from Bartlett Lake and it was miserable to say the least. No fish and lots of wind, I took the big boat so at least it was fun cruisin' around. This is the only time of year I get a chance to fish and so far it has sucked every time I've gone out! Hopefully this pond is full of big fish to ease my frustrations........I'll update on that tomorrow night! JIM>
Outdoor Writer Report post Posted April 27, 2008 Jim, Unless you go with something like this, you'll still need to use fins to move about even with the tubes where you sit higher in the water. The advantage of using a tube with fins over the little float boats is being able to manipulate it while you're fishing without having to put your rod down. They also work super on all the White Mt. lakes. That photo of me with the Apache trout is at Christmas Tree. If you should decide to get a tube, I have an extra pair of fins you can buy cheap. These previously owned fins were driven only once by a Sunday school teacher. If Nessy is living in the honey hole, just carry a big gun. -TONY
KGAINES Report post Posted April 27, 2008 Jim every time I fish in in ponds like that I think gator, not to mention the thought of fighting of a rattler in a float tube. The pond does look a little familiar.
Outdoor Writer Report post Posted April 27, 2008 Jim, I believe this is the type Amanda cited where you sit higher in the water. But we're talking inches here. -TONY

COOSEFAN Report post Posted April 27, 2008 Is that hidden pond near a bridge by any chance? No, it wouldn't be a hidden pond then! I'm pretty sure I know where you are talking about and people have been fishing there every day so I'm sure it's probably good. Same area but this is in the middle of nowhere, lots of dirt road drivin'! AZOnecam.......that's too funny I'm gonna go check out some of those float tubes right now, then hopefully go try one out this evening! Thanks, JIM>

The pond does look a little familiar. That's what I'm talkin' about! I have a fear of the "unknown" water creatures that live in the deep, dark, murky water! The snakes are a real concern, there were quite a few snake tracks crossing our trail yesterday as we headed in there. We saw several Racer type snakes but no rattlers, they are there though!!! billrquimby Report post Posted April 28, 2008 Before I bought a boat trailer from Harbor Freight I used to haul my 12-foot aluminum boat in the back of my truck and roll it to the water with a set of wheels that I clamped on the transom. If the ground isn't too rocky and rough, 200 yards shouldn't be a problem. Bill Quimby
