az4life Report post Posted April 17, 2008 Does anyone know anything about the Portand Maine area? Things to do, weekend daytrips etc.... I need to be there for a couple weeks for work and can't think of anyone familiar with the region.
SilentButDeadly Report post Posted April 17, 2008 go lobstering, go fishing, see Acadia National Park, visit that creepy lake camp from Friday 13th series, find a good micro brewery, hang out with some Mainers.

billrquimby Report post Posted April 17, 2008 Visit the L.L. Bean Co. store. It's in the middle of nowhere, but it is well worth three or four hours. Bill Quimby
TwoGuns Report post Posted April 17, 2008 Visit the L.L. Bean Co. store. It's in the middle of nowhere, but it is well worth three or four hours. Bill Quimby I agree with Bill, the L. L. Bean store is kinda cool. I also thought that Portland Headlight was very worth visiting, as well as other light houses on the coast. It really is a beautiful place to visit. darren
az4life Report post Posted April 17, 2008 Lobster and fresh seafood goes without saying. LL Bean sounds interesting too. It looks like it's in Freeport, north of Portland. I'm going to be south in Scarboro most of the time so a drive up the coast could be nice for a change. There is at least 1 hardcore fisherman going so no doubt we will try to find time for that too. I always wanted to tour a lighthouse so maybe I'll get to work that in too. Great ideas but as for socializing with locals, I am not sure the liberal folk would like to listen to what I have to say. Keep those ideas coming and I'll be able to build my wish list.
Browning'sCustomMeat Report post Posted April 17, 2008 Ain't Maine famous for cherry pie??? Supposed to have the best cherries.....
War7664 Report post Posted April 17, 2008 I'm not sure how far it is, but you should head to Bar Harbor...aka 'Bah Habah', find a good microbrewery and watch the locals go nuts over the Sox vs. Yankees games.
mikep35 Report post Posted April 17, 2008 Head about an hour south to New Hampshire to Loon Mountain. There are alot of things to do there. Also, find someone with a small boat to take you fishing on one of the dozens of little ponds in NH. Catching pickerel on rooster tails is a blast. You may want to check and see when the turkey season is up there.
jamaro Report post Posted April 18, 2008 No... Maine is famous for Whoopy Pies... I lived in Old Orchard Beach and I worked in Saco for about a year for work... You can do some fishing but it all depends on the water temps. The LL Bean store is okay.. I like the Kittery Trading Post better. There also more stuff to do in Kittery than Freeport. I used to fly into Boston so you can also visit Bean town. It is only 2 hours away. J- Old Orchard Beach is alot of fun but you will see a TON of French Canadians in Speedos... it is pretty funny.... WFGinNM Report post Posted April 21, 2008 I agree with Jason, Kittery is a neat town, and the Kittery Trading Post is worth the visit. Real good seafood at the Weathervane Restaurant. Used to live just north of Boston, and Kittery was a frequently made trip. --Bill
jamaro Report post Posted April 21, 2008 Man.. I miss the Weathervane... I loved that place... I must have spent $100 playing that game where you use the CLAW to grab live lobsters out of that big lobster tank... I met Chuck Adams at the Kittery Trading Post... They usually have some cool workshops... J
az4life Report post Posted April 22, 2008 So much work and so little free time so far but I will be trying to hit some of these places. Still running in the 50-60's so beaches probably not in much use at least for anyone in speedos. I heard LL Bean was nothing special as it's mostly clothing and only the LLB brand. Still lots of brown dead looking foliage right now but anohter month I bet it would look different. Is that Weathervane a cahin? I see one near the Jetport. (That's what these people call an Airport)
jamaro Report post Posted April 22, 2008 IMO LLB is a bunch of tree huggers... Freeport is basically a high end strip mall. If you are into maps, the DeLorme headquaters is in Freeport. Weathervane is a chain of seafood restaurants. Man they have the best dang Clam Chowder.... Ahh... the Jetport... I got stuck on the tarmac there once for two hours... Schmitty Report post Posted April 28, 2008 Plus one on the kittery trading post and seafood. I wasn't too enthralled with Freeport, though I did find a couple of good deals in LLB's version of the "bargain cave". Also, there was a knife shop in Freeport that was loaded with every type of knife at typically high touristy prices, however the kid behind the counter took me to the back room and showed me how to get a hair popping blade on my knives. One of the more valuable lessons in my life. I'd also go up the coast and just hang out in the smaller towns. The wife and I took a great two week trip hiking and traveling all over NE when she was pregnant with our first child. It was the last good trip before kids and we just went wherever we felt like with no set itinerary or plans. I much preferred the small, non tourist traps and hit any gun/sporting good shops along the way and met alot of good folks. We were equally enthralled with eachother's hunting methods. I thought it was so cool that they hunted moose and braved the seas to shoot sea ducks, while they got incredibly excited when talking about elk, pronghorn and mule deer. It was a good time. We stopped in Portland briefly, I think we hit an indoor farmer's market that wasn't terribly special. Sorry that I'm not much help there. Have fun, Schmitty
