much lower elevation but on the right track.  this has turned into a bit of a guest ranch over the last 20 years or so.  established 1895.

quite a bit higher elevation.  the original owner kept a human skull on the kitchen table where his hands ate.

"Papa killed a big bear not long ago.  It was a silvertip and an awful big one-Ida was in the chase and all the dogs got to bite him(the bear)."

"That acorn fed bear made fine shortening for bread and cake."

The sister of the photographer went on to become one of the first ladies of Arizona.

Q RANCH. Lena Ellison'

yessir.  less than two hours.

growing up i always saw the Q ranch on FS maps as a wild, remote corner of the state.  i was first introduced to the history reading slim ellisons "cowboys under the mogollon rim".  surprised to see just a moment ago my 20 year old review of the book is still posted on amazon.

good job,

I've read that same book. Colonel Ellison had a ranch west of Tonto Crk, now Ellison crk subdivision. He met out some vigilante justice back in those days and the powers back in Washington held up statehood because of it and the pleasant valley war. I'm not sure but I think Brady Ellison from Globe is a descendant and he killed a bear when he was 11 yrs old.

Is the book worth the 50-60 dollar price tag? Would love to read it.
