REDTOOTER Report post Posted September 26, 2019 I agree with the "you are over thinking / over worried about this" group... I grew up and live in 36a and I have hunted, played, camped, explored etc in most of the southern units year round for over 30+ years now . These units get a bad rap in my option, yes there is a chance you may see illegals or worse smugglers, but it's nothing like it was years ago... and when it was bad nothing a "clam head" couldn't handle. Yeah take a side arm for peace of mind if you need to, as I do when I travel up to the northern units around all those tweakers and weirdos lol, but focus on your hunt have fun and report back your successes. 1. Since there's much better board security now with the new administration, is there much issues with illegals on the Buenos Aires National Refuge? NO, currently you will probably see more BP than illegals 2. Are there a lot on Javelina in this unit? YES 3. With illegals crossing, is it dangerous to sit water as it seems illegals are more prone to hitting water as they travel? sit water without fear 4. For this area, what's a decent coues buck I should be looking for or could expect? 70's class / 80's shoot!
LVREHUNTER Report post Posted September 26, 2019 I appreciate everybody taking the time to respond! I feel much better knowing it isnt as big of a deal as I thought!
LVREHUNTER Report post Posted September 26, 2019 What about mule deer in this unit? What should I expect to see in size? Are there big miles deer bucks in these southern desert units?
Brooktrout26 Report post Posted September 30, 2019 Decent muley population, the whitetails seem to be taking over however. You can find plenty of coues down low in muley country, not the same for muleys up high.

roninflag Report post Posted October 13, 2019 I have hunted 36b a lot . glassed a lot of deer a few javs. no illegals. 100's of border patrol
Zeke-BE Report post Posted October 13, 2019 No pigs in 36B! Deer are almost gone and bucks small. Illegals are everywhere and want to harm you and your family. Most likely you will not survive. Please pick a safe unit like 37B or 24A where no one will mess with your camping trailer

I'm sure others may chime-in with responses as well, but here are my thoughts. 1) Yes, border crossings are down but there are still illegal crossers (near Buenos Aires and elsewhere.....) 2) Yes 3) Dangerous to sit water?? 🤣 Have you spent anytime in border country? Not sure where you get your information regarding illegals being 'more prone to hitting water', but I don't think many of them are drinking out of cattle tanks / drinkers. In my experience, the majority illegals try to hunker and hide or immediately head the other way if/when you come into contact with them. 4) Depends on how good of a glasser you are and LUCK. Good luck! 1 and 3 are 100% incorrect.

(Suppose if I felt threatened, I always have a long gun with me anyway. ) I tend to agree with muledeerarea33. I think you're overthinking and worrying about it all too much. Literally thousands of folks hunt the border units each year without incident. How well is that bolt action long rifle going to work engaging multiple subjects in close quarters?
