A nature lovin hippie once told me....

Recommended Posts

I was talking to this total granola loving, sandal wearing, peace sign, rainbow shirt, deadlock haired , save the whales type hippie one day. We were talking about how he was a big time "nature lover" and that I too was a big time "nature lover."

We were talking about how we loved to experience nature at its finest.

We talked and shared our obvious deferences with good conversation. And then he admitted that I knew more about nature than he did. He explained that I had experienced nature for what nature "really is!" This caught me a little off guard by his admittance . Then he said that he would like to hunt and take a deer some day at least once. "Because" he said " That is what nature is really about and if you don't participate in the hunt and the kill then you will never truly know nature"

Now, "we" know this. But I had respect for him that day because of the way he grew up and the crowd he hung out with, he was still able to realize what nature "Really Is" and be touched by it!

So if you want to leave nature alone, and keep it as it was meant to be! The get out there and participate in the hunt!!!!!

Maybe there is hope for some of them? :P

Heresy! Infidel! What you are proposing is impossible!

Okay, maybe not -- I was raised by a liberal father who at least taught me to fish, having never really hunted himself. My family are a mix of liberals and conservatives - and all of them admire that I hunt now. If they eat meat put an antelope or whitetail backstrap on their plate and they shut up with the negative comments pretty quick.

Hunting is not a conservative pass-time; it is our history, its the reason we dominate the planetary landscape today.

However, must admit I still don't know how to cure vegans or PETA people....

I once silenced a naysayer with the very same point your hippie friend made...

They couldnt understand why I couldnt just use a camera instead of a bow or a gun... for the simple reason that that just makes me a spectator instead of a participant in nature was my reply.

This shut their mouth and opened their eyes.

I have a vegetarian friend who isn't against hunting and asks me for game meat for her family so they can get high quality protein. I think she is more against the whole commercial production of farm animals more than the killing of something like a deer to eat. I guess she sees that as more natural.

I didn't take him hunting and don't know where he is at now, but gave him all the info he needed to get started.

It was on a Game and Fish Job that I did several years ago where we had to camp out and do bird serveys.

I did cook him elk heart and fresh rattle snake! Of which he loved both! He loved the "Tom Brown" books As do I We started fires in camp with stick rubbing methods. He thought that was pritty cool too.

Yes, I would call him a hippie to his face and he had his names for me to. But Were all brothers in the end. Hope he comes to relize That, some day.

That guy was reading those Tom Brown books and wanted to go hunting. Right now that guy is on a vision quest in the middle of nowhere, hopefully you talked him into carrying a weapon aside from a knife and wearing a little more than a loincloth.

I don't have a problem with vegatarians, I have a problem with the ones that want us all to be vegans.

Lance,

Totally awesome dude! You really put me in a real nice space with that post. I dig that real positive vibration you and Dreadranger created. I'm like wow! What a trip. I mean HEAVY! We don't need THE MAN or THE PIGS. All we need is each other to make a really beautiful scene. I'm so stoked! I might have to buzz by with the old lady for the gathering on my way to Burning Man. You know. the C.W. happening. I'm like, hold on man--- hope I can make it before naked drum night. Can't miss the group hug. When will the sweat be? I'm like, I want my whole rainbow family to meet everyone (can we get a bluebird bus back there), so they can really experience the great energy from the C.W. tribe.

Bob

p.s. We will be face painting for a small donation at the C.W. happening. Burning Man is expensive this year.

Great post, Lance. You motivated me to post for the first time. I generally consider myself liberal as heck (see, I even feel bad swearing lest I offend someone).

But the point you bring up is something I believe in because it goes to the very the essence of hunting. Do you want to be an observer or do you want to be a participant? Anyway, viva particpants! I know some people who are even more liberal than me who have asked me to take them hunting because they understand the primal difference you pointed out.

Anywho, thanks for the post.

-Jim

P.S. I hunt coues like I do most other things in life, not very well but very enthusiastically. Also, I think Bob is closet liberal. He's got the lingo down, man.
