Red Rabbit Report post Posted November 8, 2004 Here's a thread on another forum about taping the muzzle. http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/s...&gonew=1#UNREAD Wish I had done so last fall on my elk hunt. It had rained the day before the season, so fresh tracks were easy to detect. One morning, I had the pack on and rifle slung, reached inside the gun strap to buckle the sternum strap, and watched as the rifle slipped off the shoulder, muzzle first into the mud and then scope onto a rock . Nothing left to do but load em back up, drive back to camp where the cleaning kit/rod was, clean out the mud plugged in the barrel and check the zero. I went back to the same draw that afternoon and saw two sets of tracks/no elk in two miles. Doug/RedRabbit
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted November 8, 2004 yeah doug, i think that load that the kimber likes will shoot well enough to shoot a coues ya think? heck, maybe you should shoot for the eye at 100 yards!
azpackhorse Report post Posted November 8, 2004 (edited) You are exactly right Bullwidgeon, there are some dandys down low, I have seen several over the last few years but after what I saw during the first hunt I think I will take my chances on top. I am going to glass the low country from about midway up the first morning to ensure that up is where I really want to go plus I have never been all the way on top and deep into the range so curiousity has alot to do with it too. My pack is 42lbs and counting, still need to add more food. If I survive, it should be fun. Edited January 1, 1970 by azpackhorse
Red Rabbit Report post Posted November 8, 2004 Brian, You must have really cussed out the weatherman, because the weekend is now predicted to be partly cloudy with a slight chance for showers. I was bumming this morning, but the attitude's improving as the forecast gets better. The pack'll get lighter also with less Gore-Tex. I was ready to take a heavier synthetic-stocked rifle instead of the lighter, walnut-stocked Kimber. Doug/RedRabbit
CHD Report post Posted November 9, 2004 Good luck to all you guys this weekend. Be careful and shoot a biggun! 36c is a very exciting unit to be in! Looking forward to seeing your pics and reading your stories. A better muzzle tape (other than electrical tape) is duct tape. Also, just shoot right thru it. The gas will blow it out long before the bullet gets there, so it's not necessary to remove it before the shot. It won't affect accuracy. I have proven this at the rifle range many times. I'm delighted to see that some of you are pretty doggone perceptive about kill pictures, and to see that I'm not the only one that realizes................that the most important part of the picture is............... the background.
