They were pretty popular back in the day but had no power even thought they started the "Pony Car Craze" that Chevrolet and MOPAR jumped on like a fat kid on a candy bar and resulted in the Camaro and Barracuda which both could be had with serious horsepower. BY the time Mustangs had a big block showroom offering with the 69 Mach 1 they had about 365HP and weighed upwards of 3500 pounds. Wasn't until about 2010 when the industry caught up to the HP to Weight ratio in them but people have always wanted them.
