Jazz Report post Posted July 30, 2019 So I’m doing a few Miles tonight walking.. suns down and I’m walking the trail to fig springs. New river Mesa is about 2 miles n x ne at this point, and I come across what I swear is a huge pile of bear scat. Do they come this far south??
lancetkenyon Report post Posted July 30, 2019 Seldom, but yes. I have a coworker that lives on the very northeast edge of New River, and he had a pig killed by a bear 3 or 4 years ago.

Roosevelt Mark Report post Posted July 30, 2019 If you can make a ball out of the scat and it smells like nuts, it's bear. Check it out and chime back in.
lonne Report post Posted July 30, 2019 Bears like to roam, especially when looking for a food source...one usually wanders into Phoenix every year, that makes the news...
Edge Report post Posted July 30, 2019 Two bears have been removed from Peoria in recent memory. Problem is, a couple weeks ago you thought a bobcat was a decent looking lion.

Outdoor Writer Report post Posted July 31, 2019 About 20 years ago, my oldest son and I got leftover Coues permits for 30B. We hunted at the southern end of the Dragoons. The first morning, we were glassing a promising looking canyon off a long grassy ridge that had few trees on it. I looked to my right and saw something black moving through the tall grass about 400 yards away. At first I thought it was a cow but decided it wasn't moving like one. So I swiveled my binocs in that direction and saw that it was very big bear. He eventually wandered over the ridge and out of sight. I never expected to see a bear south of I10 except perhaps in Unit 29.
