lancetkenyon Report post Posted July 23, 2019 Who else is shooting them? I have just started testing them in a brand new 6.5SS w. 26" 1:7.5" twist. 156 Elite @ .010" jump vs. 140 Hybrid @ .020" jump Results are looking very promising so far. Once the barrel breaks in and speeds up, these are going to slay some game. Even at 2988-3027fps in a new barrel, they are no slouch. 200 yard group in 111*F, heavy mirage, and windy conditions
Tikka Report post Posted July 23, 2019 that's a good looking bullet/case combo
CouesPursuit Report post Posted July 23, 2019 No slouch at all. Should be a great bullet for the cartridges fast enough to push them. If you're shooting the 156gr @ 3027 FPS, how fast are the 140gr?
lancetkenyon Report post Posted July 23, 2019 I have exactly 21 rounds through the new 6.5SS, all with the 156. Have not tried the 140s in the new one yet. But I have them running 3120 in my old 6.5SS. Have them up to 3166 in other 6.5SSs I have loaded for. I have 200 of the 6.5mm 131 Hammer Hunters in route for the new 6.5SS too. Hoping to push them 3160-3220+ when I get them in hand and load work complete.

Obviously the 6.5SS is not comparable to my 6.5CM, and I won't be trying the 156gr myself, but I was trying to put things into perspective. Although with different powders, my 6.5CM pushes a 130gr Sierra @ 3060FPS and a 143gr ELD-X at 2750FPS. I was very surprised at the difference.
10Turkeys Report post Posted July 23, 2019 I know some guys that are shooting the 150 smk with a 8 twist and are doing ok, what do you think about a 8 twist with the 156's? How do you think that 7.5 will work with a lighter bullet, say a 120?
lancetkenyon Report post Posted July 23, 2019 Berger states "minimum twist rate" of 1:8" for the new 156.....but that is not necessarily the OPTIMAL twist rate. I shoot the 150 SMKs in my 1:8" 6.5SS with very good results. Both on target and on game. I am hoping for 3050-3100 once this barrel breaks in with the 156. I am sure I could get a bot more with NV565 or RL26, but I will be sticking with H1000 or possibly RL23 to keep it stable, accurate and clean. I think these bullets are much better suited for the bigger case capacity 6.5s. For a 6.5 CM, 6.5x47L, .260 Rem, 6.5SLR, etc. the max I would personally shoot is a 140-143. I run the 130 OTM in my 22" 1:8" 6.5SLR @ 2888 w. H4350. I could get more, but I will take the accuracy and stability over 50fps more.
broadhead Report post Posted November 21, 2020 This is a year plus old thread but I thought someone might have put these to use on a coues by now. I have an extremely accurate load for it using N565 and am hoping the bullet performs well at distances up to about 500 yards
SHOOTER Report post Posted November 21, 2020 I killed a coues buck with one last year. 520 yards entered behind the last rib exited in front of front shoulder. 156gr with MV 3000 fps . The deer didnt take another step. Lots of internal damage. Quarter size exit hole. Would use them again with confidence. I know a couple of people that used them on bull elk this year with good results.
shanehamblin Report post Posted November 29, 2020 Me and my son both killed an elk and I killed a coues. Have done well for me in my PRC. The load I have worked up right now just got me through hunting season but hoping to tighten it up a bit.

I’m a little concerned that a closer shot (say inside 150 yards) might be be a mess.
