70 mph sheds....

Recommended Posts

Been too busy tryin' to fill my "Hog Tag" :P to get up after some sheds, but I did make it up about 2 weeks ago for a day.

The plan was to ride the mules for the day and we left my buddy's house right at daylight to make the 30 minute drive to our spot where another buddy was waiting for us with the mules. We were runnin' late so we were flyin' up the freeway chatting about our hopes of finding some sheds and excited about the day, knowing we'll at least get to spend the day horseback in some amazing country. I occasionally glanced out the window and on one of these glances I saw a couple tines sticking up......"SHED"!!! Dang near on two wheels and in a split second I had my northbound truck facing south and tearin' asphalt! I overshot the spot where I had seen the tines and as I pulled off the highway I looked over and there, in all it's glory, was the matching side about 50 yards from the first one I saw! We jumped out, feeling like we needed to grab em' before somebody else did, and investigated how fresh and how the antlers came to rest there. I first thought the bull jumped the fence, but it was obvious the bull ran from the highway towards the fence. Just before going over the left side fell and he cut hard right digging deep into the dirt. He then ran along the fence for about 50 yards, dropped the right side and cut left, finally jumping the fence! The blood wasn't dried yet and there were fresh splatters on the beams.......I've seen blood drops on the antlers before and always thought the bull stood there and looked at the antler, but appearantly that's not the case. The tracks were running and he still got blood on the antler on both....my guess now is that the blood splatters when it rips the hide that is embedded in the burrs? These sheds score close to 360" as they are with an inside of 40", and probably around 365" if not for the broken tines and tips......the best part is the 3" devil-tines makin' it a 7x7!

We then proceeded to go ride 16 miles on the mules.........and found only 1 white spike antler :( You wouldn't beleive the amount of quad tracks and how well those guys cover the countryside. It's no joke that out of all those miles we rode, you would cross a quad track every 100 yards or less.......and that was 2 weeks ago! The elk had been pushed around a bunch and most pushed out because of this and that's what sucks. We rode up into the thick nasty rough stuff to get away from the pressure and it didn't matter........they had been there too! Oh well, thanks for checkin' out my "easy" sheds ;) JIM>

Yeah....I've been known to have a bit of luck on my side ;) I tell ya what, I bet these sheds wouldn't have sat there for very much longer! They were alot more hidden from the road than the pic's look, and were about 20 yards off, but there is something about white antler tips and tines that stand out.....even at 70 mph! Quite a few shed hunters were parked off the highway in either direction and not far from this set........like has been said, I just got lucky, but i'll take em' how I get em'! :P

No wonder you didn't get drawn this year, you blew all of your luck on finding those things, from your truck, going 70mph!?!! Unbelievable!

Maybe you should learn to meditate and focus your inner Chi - I bet you could levitate or something one day if you practice enough.

Shoot, just look at those 400 inch bulls you helped on last year, then glassing a fricking Jaguar -- more evidence of your inner luck charm,

Heck, I'm going to call you the 'Golden Buddha' from now on.

You know what it is......if you spend enough time in the woods you see and find some neat stuff! You of all people know that ;) :P

And besides........with all the luck I have, I still don't have enough luck to find as many Coues sheds as you do!!! :P JIM>

I was telling Casey today - I get my luck from my wife (unfortunately luck swings both good and bad).

You are also wise though, Golden Buddha, yes finding antlers is more about persistence and hard work - but by gosh every time I'm out there walking I swear it is dumb luck that helps me kick a shed out of the dirt before I step over it.
